Maybe you’ve seen Jujutsu Kaisen’s Yuji Itadori (or a few other characters) unleash a devastatingly cool attack that flashes black—but how does that work? And which JJK characters can do it? In this article, we’ll explain everything you need to know about this empowered “Black Flash” attack and how it works. We’ll also expand on each sorcerer known to have used it in JJK, including how and when they did so. Just keep reading to learn more about this neat jujutsu technique!

An Overview of the Black Flash & What It Does

Black Flash is a power-up that can trigger in combat; it occurs when a sorcerer applies cursed energy to a physical hit within 0.000001 seconds of landing that hit. The influx of cursed energy flashes black and sparks, adding a significant amount of power (2.5x) to the hit. They’re very difficult to perform.

What is Black Flash in Jujutsu Kaisen?

  1. 1
Black Flash is a form of powered-up attack in JJK. It’s essentially a distortion in space, occurring specifically when cursed energy is applied to a physical hit (within one millionth of a second of that strike). This causes the cursed energy in the strike to flash black and adds 2.5x the amount of power compared to a regular hit, usually dealing significant amounts of damage to the target.[1]
    • Basically, a jujutsu sorcerer has to apply their cursed energy to a physical attack, like a punch or kick.
    • Black Flash is a close-range attack, essentially used to amplify the power of a sorcerer’s strike.
  2. 2
Black Flash requires both concentration and skill to perform. A Black Flash might look simple to perform, but it definitely isn’t; even sorcerers like Gojo are incapable of performing one at will. Rather, sorcerers attempting to perform a Black Flash must pour an enormous amount of concentration into their efforts—not to mention sorcery skills and combat potential.[2]
    • Yuji Itadori is thought to be blessed by the sparks of black, but he still can’t use Black Flash totally at will.
    • Gojo has theorized that more conditions need to be met to trigger a Black Flash than they’re aware of—conditions such as physical condition, the user and their opponent’s cursed energy, or even temperature and humidity.

  3. 3
It’s difficult to use Black Flash multiple times in the same day. Kento Nanami—who held the record for the number of consecutive Black Flashes (four) until Yuji surpassed him—explains that triggering multiple Black Flashes isn’t a straightforward endeavor. Even if one manages to achieve a single Black Flash, that doesn’t mean the next one will be a breeze![3]
    • Triggering Black Flashes can also send sorcerers into an altered state in which manipulating cursed energy becomes utterly natural—basically, like being “in the zone.”
    • Entering this heightened state of power and awareness allows the sorcerer to operate at a higher level in combat, too (at approximately 120% of their maximum potential, to be specific).

Who can use Black Flash in Jujutsu Kaisen?

PDF download Download Article
  1. Any jujutsu sorcerer or cursed energy wielder can theoretically use Black Flash, although, as we’ve already established, it takes a lot of skill to accomplish and can’t be done at will. A sorcerer must be deliberate and put considerable strength into their Black Flash attack! That said, several Jujutsu Kaisen characters have used Black Flash thus far in both the anime and manga. They are:
    • Yuta Okkotsu (manga and movie)
    • Kento Nanami (manga and movie)
    • Yuji Itadori (manga and anime)
    • Nobara Kugisaki (manga and anime)
    • Aoi Todo (manga and anime)
    • Mahito (manga and anime)
    • Satoru Gojo (manga; the anime hasn’t gotten that far yet)
    • Ryomen Sukuna (manga; the anime hasn’t gotten that far yet)

Every Time Black Flash Has Been Used in Jujutsu Kaisen

Yuta Okkotsu (Jujutsu Kaisen 0)Yuta Okkotsu ends up in a fight against Suguru Geto during Jujutsu Kaisen 0, during the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons. And, in the midst of that battle, Yuta breaks his sword (by accident, after imbuing it with too much cursed energy) and pivots, landing a physical punch on Geto and turning it into a Black Flash.
  2. 2
Kento Nanami (Jujutsu Kaisen 0)Nanami also uses Black Flash during the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons—and he manages it an impressive four times in a row (which isn’t something many sorcerers can do). He uses the first three Black Flash punches to destroy multiple cursed spirits simultaneously; then, on the fourth hit, he combined Black Flash with his Ratio Technique to cut a giant curse in half.[4]
    • Nanami’s Ratio Technique effectively divides a target with ten lines, creating weak spots at specific ratio points and allowing Nanami to divide specific parts of the target’s body or form.
  3. 3
Yuji Itadori (Jujutsu Kaisen)Yuji has used Black Flash numerous times in Jujutsu Kaisen, starting with an encounter with the cursed spirit Hanami during the Kyoto Sister-School Goodwill Event. Aoi Todo taught Yuji how to flow properly to execute Black Flash, which Yuji promptly did, dealing a load of damage to Hanami; ultimately, Yuji matched Nanami’s record and landed four consecutive Black Flashes on Hanami.
    • Yuji also used Black Flash while battling Eso and Kechizu, the Cursed Womb: Death Paintings. He obliterated Eso’s arm with a single punch!
    • Later, Yuji used Black Flash while he and Todo battled Mahito, with Todo using Boogie Woogie to swap their places and enable Yuji’s attacks.
    • While participating in the raid against Sukuna, Yuji actually broke his previous record, landing six consecutive Black Flashes on the King of Curses. He went on to deal a total of nine Black Flashes to Sukuna over the course of the battle.
    • Technically, this means Yuji holds the JJK record for the number of consecutive Black Flashes!
  4. 4
Nobara Kugisaki (Jujutsu Kaisen)Nobara and Yuji defeated the Cursed Womb: Death Paintings together, and both of them used Black Flash during the fight. Nobara specifically used Black Flash alongside her Straw Doll technique, shoving a nail right through Kechizu’s head and then destroying him with her Hairpin ability.
  5. 5
Mahito (Jujutsu Kaisen)Unlike the other characters here, Mahito isn’t a jujutsu sorcerer—he’s a Special Grade cursed spirit. Mahito used Black Flash to brutal effect during the Shibuya Incident; after grievously wounding Nobara (thus distracting and devastating Yuji), Mahito caught Yuji by surprise with a Black Flash and flung him clear across Shibuya Station.
    • Mahito also followed up with a Black Flash attack against Todo, injuring him (although Todo was still able to fight).
  6. 6
Aoi Todo (Jujutsu Kaisen)Remember that fight between Yuji, Todo, and Mahito we were just talking about? Well, Todo managed to land a Black Flash in that battle, too! That particular attack didn’t really end up doing major damage to Mahito (as the curse’s soul wasn’t affected), but it was still an impressive attack. Todo packed Black Flash into a brutal kick, in part because he wanted to keep up with Yuji.
  7. 7
Satoru Gojo (Jujutsu Kaisen)Satoru Gojo might be the most powerful sorcerer in the world (Sukuna aside), but even he can’t use Black Flash at will. Nonetheless, Gojo does use it! In his monumental fight with Sukuna—in the manga, that is—Gojo unleashes a particularly devastating Black Flash against the King of Curses, and follows up with another Black Flash against Merged Beast Agito.
    • Gojo also uses Black Flash against the Eight-Handled Sword Divergent Sila Divine General Mahoraga during his battle, blasting the shikigami into a building.
  8. 8
Sukuna (Jujutsu Kaisen)Finally, there’s Ryomen Sukuna, the King of Curses—and he definitely uses Black Flash more than a few times in later chapters of the manga. During the raid, Sukuna first launches a Black Flash attack on Maki Zenin; later, he uses another to throw the sorcerer Larue into a wall. Maki takes yet another Black Flash attack, followed by Choso and then Yuji.[5]
    • Using a moment of distraction, Sukuna sends his sixth Black Flash at Todo.
    • Sukuna’s seventh and final Black Flash of that battle is directed at Hana Kurusu, although Todo manages to shield her from the worst of the attack.

How Yuji Itadori Masters the Black Flash

PDF download Download Article
  1. Yuji’s status as a partial curse helps him master the Black Flash. Several factors make it easier for him to land Black Flashes than for most other people, starting with his being a partial curse (due to Kenjaku); this gives him enhanced capabilities, putting him on a similar level to Maki Zenin in terms of physical prowess. He’s also blessed with the sparks of black, which we’ve already mentioned; this gives him an innate ability to trigger the “flow state” that makes landing Black Flashes easier.
    • After consuming multiple Death Paintings, Yuji also gains the Blood Manipulation technique—and he has Sukuna’s cursed technique engraved on him.
    • Altogether, each of these factors contributes to Yuji’s potential as a jujutsu sorcerer (which is said to be equal to that of Ryomen Sukuna) and enables him to become a master of triggering Black Flashes.
