Learn about the strongest sorcerers & how grades work in JJK
PDF download Download Article

Fans of Jujutsu Kaisen know that a sorcerer’s prestige all comes down to their “grade,” a ranking that measures their skill and power. But what about sorcerers whose abilities are too strong and incredibly destructive to classify alongside all the others? Well, those are known as “special grade” sorcerers, with “special grade” being a rank so exclusive that only four sorcerers have officially obtained it. In this article, we’ll explain everything you need to know about JJK’s special grade sorcerer and what the rank itself truly means!

A Quick Overview of Special Grade Sorcerers

Special grade sorcerers are the most powerful sorcerers in the world; their destructive abilities are too strong to measure with the usual grading system and capable of toppling nations. There are four special grade sorcerers: Suguru Geto, Yuta Okkotsu, Yuki Tsukumo, and Satoru Gojo (as well as Sukuna, presumably).

What are special grade sorcerers in Jujutsu Kaisen?

  1. While most “grades” are indicated with a number, the special grade is reserved for anomalies—sorcerers with such incredible power (and destructive potential) that it’s impossible to measure or quantify. That’s why there are very few recognized special grade sorcerers in the world![1]
    • Currently, only four sorcerers are officially registered as “special grade,” with a fifth (Sukuna) definitely being special grade despite not officially being given the rank.

Every Special Grade Sorcerer in Jujutsu Kaisen

  1. Geto was Gojo’s best friend while the two were students, and both ranked as the strongest of their generation. Geto wielded a massive reserve of cursed spirits, which he later accumulated for the purpose of eradicating all non-sorcerers on Earth after going rogue. And Geto’s rebellion resulted in him being labeled the worst and most dangerous of all curse users, later earning him a death sentence.[2]
    • Cursed Technique: Cursed Spirit Manipulation
    • Domain Expansion: Unknown
  2. Yuki is a special grade sorcerer unaligned with Jujutsu High, as she prefers to do things her own way (rather than bowing to jujutsu society’s higher-ups). She’s also Todo Aoi’s former mentor, having taken him under her wing as a boy. While she doesn’t appear much in early arcs, Yuki joins the Culling Game to protect younger sorcerers and nearly defeats Kenjaku single-handedly in a battle against him and Choso.[3]
    • Cursed Technique: Star Rage
    • Domain Expansion: Unknown
  3. Yuta Okkotsu is most definitely an anomaly: he was ranked at Special Grade immediately upon enrolling at Jujutsu High, but he wasn’t a skilled sorcerer at all; rather, he was irrevocably attached to Rika, the Queen of Curses and remnants of his childhood sweetheart. Over time, Yuta learned to control Rika and his own cursed technique; now, he has the potential to surpass even Satoru Gojo (something Gojo himself declared).
    • Cursed Technique: Copy (innate), Rika
    • Domain Expansion: Authentic Mutual Love
  4. Satoru Gojo really is one of a kind: he’s the first member of the Gojo Clan to inherit the Six Eyes and Limitless technique in centuries, and by the time he’d become a second-year student at Jujutsu High, he was already dubbed “the strongest” (alongside his best friend, Suguru Geto). His cursed energy is nearly unlimited, and he has mastered multiple cursed technique reversals (Red and Hollow Purple). Simply put, he is hands-down the strongest sorcerer of his lifetime.[4]
    • Cursed Technique: Limitless (and offshoots such as Infinity, Cursed Technique Lapse: Blue, Cursed Technique Reversal: Red, and Hollow Technique: Purple)
    • Domain Expansion: Unlimited Void
  5. Just as Gojo is the strongest sorcerer of his lifetime, so Sukuna was the most powerful in his—and his existence continues over 1,000 years later as the “King of Curses,” incarnated when Yuji consumed his finger. Thus, Sukuna is the absolute strongest sorcerer in Jujutsu Kaisen, bar none, as well as the most malevolent. He can transform himself into cursed objects and transfer his soul to different hosts (among many other powerful abilities).[5]
    • Cursed Technique: Shrine, Dismantle, Cleave, Spiderweb, Divine Flame
    • Domain Expansion: Malevolent Shrine
    • Despite Sukuna not being “officially” given the special grade rank, there’s absolutely no doubt that’s what he’d be if he were part of the jujutsu society. He’s too powerful to be anything else!
  6. Plenty of powerful sorcerers in Jujutsu Kaisen don’t have confirmed ranks—but a select few could be special grade, especially Kenjaku. An ancient curse-user who is over 1,000 years old, Kenjaku is so powerful that he orchestrates the Culling Game, a deadly battle royale. He’s also a genius sorcerer who survives by transplanting his brain into other people’s bodies, and is probably JJK’s most dangerous villain, after Sukuna!
    • Other honorable mentions who could potentially be special grade include Maki Zenin and Hajime Kashimo.
      • Maki is officially grade 4, but only because of the Zenin clan’s prejudice against her; in the Culling Game arc, she unlocks her full potential, reaching a fully awakened state comparable to that of a special grade sorcerer.[6]
      • Hajime Kashimo is a reincarnated sorcerer brought into the Culling Game, known in his own lifetime as the “God of Lightning.” He doesn’t have an official rank, but could be a contender for special grade.

How Grades Work in Jujutsu Kaisen

  1. This system categorizes sorcerers by grade, with available grades being 1 to 4 (plus a special grade). A grade indicates (generally) how strong a sorcerer is and their current skill level, with students at Jujutsu High usually starting at a grade 4 (the lowest grade). Here’s the complete list of available grades:[7]
    • Grade 4 - This grade is given to relatively inexperienced sorcerers and those who would be considered weak or below-average.
    • Grade 3 - This grade is considered “average.” The majority of jujutsu sorcerers (particularly students) probably have this rank.
    • Semi-Grade 2 - This grade isn’t really discussed much in Jujutsu Kaisen, but it’s probably a middle-ground between grades 3 and 2.
    • Grade 2 - At this grade, a sorcerer can be considered above-average. Many strong sorcerers fall somewhere between grades 1 and 2, and a student being ranked at grade 2 is seen as an amazing achievement.
      • Furthermore, students who make grade 2 upon enrolling are considered prodigies.
    • Semi-Grade 1 - This rank is given to sorcerers who are in the process of achieving grade 1—they’ve successfully completed their “accompanied” missions and been recommended for grade 1.
    • Grade 1 - These sorcerers are the cream of the crop and the ones deemed fit to lead society, embodying all that jujutsu sorcerers should strive for. This is technically the highest grade, since “special grade” is reserved for the extreme cases whose powers can’t possibly be quantified with a number.
    • Special Grade 1 - This rank is reserved for sorcerers at the same caliber and skill level as a grade 1 sorcerer, but who aren’t affiliated with Jujutsu High and therefore never received an official grade.
    • Special Grade - As we’ve already discussed, this grade is for unique cases only—the select few whose powers are too far outside the norm to be measured by typical standards.
  2. Cursed tools are ranked from grades 1 to 4 based on their power, as are cursed spirits. Although this system has the same grades as the one used for sorcerers, they aren’t determined in the same way. One main distinction used to rank cursed spirits is whether or not they can use cursed techniques. Meanwhile, cursed objects are ranked based on the grade of the curse they contain.
    • Grade 4 - Relatively low-powered spirits.
    • Grade 3 - Spirits of average power.
    • Semi-Grade 2 and Grade 2 - These cursed spirits have a lot of cursed energy and are sometimes even intelligent; they must be exorcised by experienced sorcerers.
    • Semi-Grade 1 and Grade 1 - These spirits can use cursed techniques and attack with cursed energy, making them extremely dangerous to exorcise. These spirits are typically capable of communicating.
    • Special Grade - These cursed spirits are the most deadly of them all and have intelligence on par with that of a human. Any spirit whose power is superior to that of grade 1 can be considered Special Grade.
    • Unregistered Special Grade - These spirits have the power of a special grade curse, but haven’t officially been registered yet; they start appearing in Jujutsu Kaisen after Sukuna’s reincarnation.
  3. The only way for a jujutsu sorcerer to get a promotion is by receiving a recommendation from a higher-ranked sorcerer. Once given a recommendation, the sorcerer submits a request to a jujutsu higher-up. However, teachers can’t recommend their own students for promotion.
    • Promotion to grade 1 is a longer process; the nominee must get recommendations from two or more grade 1 sorcerers and then accompany them on several missions.
    • After that, a nominated sorcerer will gain the rank of semi-grade 1 and be given a solo mission to exorcise a grade 1 curse; their success determines whether the nomination is approved.
    • Typically, jujutsu sorcerers are sent on missions to deal with curses graded at the same rank as they are. For instance, a grade 2 sorcerer would be sent to fight a grade 2 curse.
    • However, that’s not because the two are equal in power; rather, a grade 2 sorcerer would be closer to a grade 1 curse (which is why they’re expected to hold their own against a grade 2 curse).

Known Character Grades in Jujutsu Kaisen

  1. Now, let’s talk about the sorcerers confirmed to have a grade (and which grade they’ve been assigned thus far). However, keep in mind that not all characters in Jujutsu Kaisen have had their grades openly revealed, or been assigned a grade at all yet, so you won’t see every character below.
    • Grade 4 - Maki Zenin (However, she probably shouldn’t be grade 4, since she only still holds that rank due to the Zenin clan purposefully preventing her promotion).
    • Grade 3 - Nobara Kugisaki, Mai Zenin
    • Semi-Grade 2 - Panda
    • Grade 2 - Takuma Ino, Megumi Fushiguro
    • Semi-Grade 1 - Toge Inumaki, Noritoshi Kamo, Kokichi Muta, Utahime Iori
    • Grade 1 - Kento Nanami, Mei Mei, Aoi Todo, Atsuya Kusakabe, Masamichi Yaga
    • Special Grade 1 - Naobito Zenin, Naoya Zenin, Jinichi Zenin, Ogi Zenin
    • Special Grade - Satoru Gojo, Suguru Geto, Yuki Tsukumo, Yuta Okkotsu, Sukuna (not officially, but impossible to be any other rank)
  2. Even fewer cursed spirits have been given official grades in Jujutsu Kaisen than sorcerers—in fact, no named spirits have a grade below 2 (or, if they do, it hasn’t been revealed yet). Nonetheless, let’s take a look at the known grades of some important cursed spirits in Jujutsu Kaisen:
    • Grade 2 - Ko-Guy
    • Semi-Grade 1 - Unnamed spirit (sent by Suguru to attack Yuta and Toge), unnamed spirit (sent by Principal Gakuganji to kill Yuji)
    • Special Grade - Cursed Rika (attached to Yuta), Tamamo-no-Mae, Smallpox Deity, Kurourushi, Ganesha, Akuro-o Otake
    • Unregistered Special Grade - Mojito, Jogo, Hanami, Dagon, Choso, Eso, Kechizu, Finger Bearers (with Mahito, Hanami, Jogo, and Dagon forming a faction together)
