Anime expert Dr. Applesauce discusses the main JJK villains and their backstories
PDF download Download Article

Are you interested in getting to know Jujutsu Kaisen’s many villain characters? We can help with that! After all, what would a protagonist be without a great villain (or twenty) to bring out their heroic side? For this article, we partnered with an anime expert to help us go over the most important villains in Jujutsu Kaisen, including their powers and why they’re significant to the story—while ranking them from strongest to weakest. Just be warned: there are spoilers ahead!

Introducing JJK’s Major Villains

Anime expert Dr. Applesauce says the main villains in Jujutsu Kaisen are Sukuna, Suguru Geto, and Kenjaku. Sukuna is the “big bad” of the entire series, and other antagonists show up along the way, including Geto, Kenjaku, Mahoraga, and Toji Fushiguro. Each villain has their own special skills and abilities.

Ryōmen Sukuna

PDF download Download Article
  1. According to Dr. Applesauce, Sukuna is the main villain in the series that you find out about right away.[1] He is the most powerful of Jujutsu Kaisen’s villains, hands-down. Known as the “King of Curses,” he may also be the strongest character overall (debatable, since he’s ultimately defeated, but that’s a group effort). After all, Sukuna is essentially the mind behind Domain Expansions in the first place, having first used one to vanquish a curse millennia ago. It’s no wonder that Sukuna’s defeat is a team effort; not even Satoru Gojo could stop this powerhouse alone.[2]
    • Dr. Applesauce says Sukuna was an extremely powerful ancient sorcerer. He couldn’t be completely killed, so they cut off his fingers, sealed them, and hid them in different places because there were residual bits of his energy left in them.[3]
    • “The main character, Yuji Itadori, ends up eating one of these fingers and becomes Sukuna's vessel,” Dr. Applesauce continues. “So, a piece of Sukuna resides inside of him and they have to fight to keep Sukuna from manifesting again.”[4]
    • Cursed technique: Shrine
    • Domain expansion: Malevolent Shrine
    • First appearance: Episode 1

  1. Kenjaku is probably Jujutsu Kaisen’s most dangerous and devastatingly powerful villain behind Sukuna himself. In the show, his claim to fame is helping several Special Grade spirits seal Gojo in the Prison Realm—and orchestrate the Culling Game, which is a massive battle royale that forces sorcerers to kill one another. Needless to say, he has a lot of power at his disposal, and because of his technique, he can use his host's powers as well as his own.
    • According to Dr. Applesauce, Kenjaku’s cursed technique allows him to implant his mind into different sorcerers throughout history. In Jujutsu Kaisen 0, he possesses Suguru Geto’s body, using Cursed Spirit Manipulation, and uses him as a host vehicle.[5]
    • Cursed technique: Brain Transplant
    • Domain expansion: Womb Profusion
    • First appearance: Episode 5
  1. Mahoraga is a ridiculously overpowered shikigami whose special ability basically allows him to adapt to…well, anything. Shonen guidelines say that Megumi Fushiguro will one day learn to exorcise him, but for the moment, only Gojo or Sukuna himself stands a chance against the shikigami. During Mahoraga’s season two battle with Sukuna, you can actually see Mahoraga adapt to Sukuna’s attacks as they come, with Sukuna only winning the fight by unleashing his own special abilities: Malevolent Shrine and an arrow of fire.
    • Cursed technique: N/A (but uses a special ability called “Universal Adaptation”)
    • Domain expansion: N/A
    • First appearance: Episode 41

Suguru Geto

PDF download Download Article
  1. Suguru Geto is one of four officially-recognized Special Grade sorcerers (the others being Yuki Tsukumo, Yuta Okkotsu, and Satoru Gojo). However, Geto himself isn’t a villain in the main series—that’s Kenjaku, inhabiting his body after having transplanted his brain. The real Geto is actually a major villain in Jujutsu Kaisen 0, in which he unleashes thousands of curses on Yuta because he wants to steal the spirit attached to him (Rika, the Queen of Curses).[6]
    • Dr. Applesauce says you don’t know Geto is a villain until season 2, which starts with a flashback that covers Geto’s backstory. Later, you learn that Kenjaku has actually been possessing Geto’s body and using him as a host vehicle.[7]
    • Cursed technique: Cursed Spirit Manipulation
    • Domain expansion: Unknown
    • First appearance: Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie

Hajime Kashimo

PDF download Download Article
  1. Hajime is a reincarnated sorcerer who briefly becomes an antagonist—before ultimately working alongside JJK’s heroes instead. Called “the God of Lightning,” Kashimo has incredible lightning-based powers, speed, and hand-to-hand fighting skills. Despite not having a domain expansion—and without even using his cursed technique—Kashimo manages to force Sukuna into his true form in battle. Now that’s impressive![8]
    • Cursed technique: Mythical Beast Amber
    • Domain expansion: N/A
    • First appearance: Episode 53

Toji Fushiguro

PDF download Download Article
  1. Toji Fushiguro is JJK’s “Sorcerer Killer”—an infamous hitman capable of slaying genuinely powerful sorcerers. His lack of cursed energy means that Toji can sneak up on any sorcerer without exception, which is what allowed him to defeat Gojo once (arguably the greatest sorcerer of his lifetime). However, because he lets Gojo live, the sorcerer later gets revenge by killing Toji. Nonetheless, Toji has quite the reputation and is even a favorite villain among JJK fans![9]
    • Cursed technique: N/A (no cursed energy, but is physically gifted instead)
    • Domain expansion: N/A
    • First appearance: Episode 25
7

Hiromi Higuruma

PDF download Download Article
  1. Hiromi isn’t so much a “villain” as he is a temporary antagonist—but his powers are remarkable enough to merit mentioning on this list! Though he eventually agrees to be Yuji’s ally in the Culling Game, he demands to fight Yuji first, using a domain expansion that steals cursed energy from a guilty person. He effectively puts Yuji on trial before capitulating, recognizing that Sukuna is the true guilty party. He also learns incredibly fast, mastering Domain Amplification after merely watching Gojo use it.[10]
    • Cursed technique: Judgeman
    • Domain expansion: Deadly Sentencing
    • First appearance: Episode 54

  1. Yorozu is a reincarnated sorcerer from the Heian period, and is considered among the strongest of her era. She managed to create and hone her own fighting style based on insects (their properties, movements, and more), and her cursed technique lets her reproduce insectoid traits, including bug-like armor. Yorozu uses intelligence, creativity, and clever tactics to gain the upper hand in battle—compounded, of course, with her unique powers.
    • Cursed technique: Construction
    • Domain expansion: Threefold Affliction
    • First appearance: N/A (not in the anime yet); Chapter 211 (manga)
  1. As a cursed spirit, Mahito’s cursed technique can strike fear into all but the most skilled jujutsu sorcerers: he can actually change the shape of a person’s soul, and in doing that, also reshape their body at will until they become a distorted human-curse hybrid. In fact, Yuji nearly falls victim to Mahito’s technique, as it’s really only Sukuna’s intervention that saves him. Mahito is later destroyed when Kenjaku absorbs him to gain his technique.[11]
    • Dr. Applesauce says Mahito isn’t a main antagonist, but he’s still one of the most popular bad guys in Jujutsu Kaisen.[12]
    • Cursed technique: Idle Transfiguration
    • Domain expansion: Embodiment of Perfection
    • First appearance: Episode 7

  1. Jogo is a cursed spirit with a surprising level of knowledge on jujutsu sorcery (compared to other spirits, at least). He’s probably also the strongest spirit to make an appearance in the show’s first season—even if Gojo, with his usual swagger, makes short work of Jogo after bringing Yuji into the battle as a training exercise. Still, Jogo at least managed to survive Gojo’s Domain Expansion. He also launched an attack that almost hurt Sukuna, something for which the King of Curses expressed a bit of admiration.[13]
    • Cursed technique: Disaster Flames, Ember Insects
    • Domain expansion: Coffin of the Iron Mountain
    • First appearance: Episode 5
  1. Uraume is an ancient follower of Sukuna, who really only cares about reviving the King of Curses, going so far as to ally with Kenjaku (despite their distaste for him) to do so. With Kenjaku, they manage to seal Satoru Gojo in the Prison Realm—and later, during the Culling Game, Uraume takes part in a battle with an incarnated Sukuna against Yuji, Maki, Zenin, and Hana Kurusu. With the ability to make and control ice, Uraume demonstrates their skill as one of the strongest sorcerers around.
    • Cursed technique: Ice Formation
    • Domain expansion: Frost Calm & Icefall
    • First appearance: Episode 21

  1. Dagon is one of the most dangerous Special Grade curses encountered in Jujutsu Kaisen, strong enough in his “evolved” form that the combined efforts of Megumi, Maki, Nanami, and Naobito Zenin still couldn’t defeat him. Earlier in the series, Dagon appears to be a sort of cursed womb-like creature, which undercuts how dangerous he really is. But when Dagon evolves into a muscular monster with a squid-like face, all bets are off![14]
    • Cursed technique: Disaster Tides
    • Domain expansion: Horizon of the Captivating Skandha
    • First appearance: Episode 5
  1. Hanami is yet another extremely powerful Special Grade spirit, and this one makes its grand entrance during the Joint High School Team Battle. While attempting to steal Ryomen Sukuna’s fingers, Hanami ends up in a battle against Yuji Itadori and Aoi Todo—and there really isn’t a clear winner, but Hanami does manage to escape despite taking a tremendous blow from Satoru Gojo. In the end, though, Gojo finished the job during the Shibuya Incident.
    • Cursed technique: Disaster Plants
    • Domain expansion: Shining Sea of Growing Branches
    • First appearance: Episode 5

  1. Choso is yet another character who starts as an antagonist, but ultimately aligns himself with Yuji—though for Choso, that decision is personal. As Eso and Kechizu’s brother, Choso is also Yuji’s half-brother; upon learning this, he immediately begins protecting Yuji at all costs, furious over being manipulated by Kenjaku. On a technical level, Choso is a half-human, half-spirit capable of using a blood manipulation technique combined with multiple clever attacks.[15]
    • Cursed technique: Blood Manipulation
    • Domain expansion: N/A (Uses an anti-domain technique called Simple Domain)
    • First appearance: Episode 24

Naoya Zenin

PDF download Download Article
  1. Naoya Zenin goes from the Zenin Clan’s arrogant heir to a raging, cursed spirit, all because of his relative, Maki Zenin. As an heir, Naoya frequently belittled Maki (and all of the women in his family). But, when Maki gets her Heavenly Restriction ability and sets about destroying the remainder of the Zenin Clan, Naoya comes face-to-face with her—and is handily defeated. Though Maki leaves him to die, Naoya is so furious that he reincarnates as a cursed spirit…only for Maki to put him down a second time.
    • Cursed technique: Projection Sorcery
    • Domain expansion: Time Cell Moon Palace
    • First appearance: N/A (not in the anime yet); Chapter 138 (manga)

Eso and Kechizu

PDF download Download Article
  1. Eso and Kechizu are a pair of special-grade cursed spirits who end up facing off against Yuji and Nobara in the Death Painting arc—and, despite their strength, are viciously defeated by the sorcerers. Still, Eso and Kechizu’s fight is an iconic one in Jujutsu Kaisen, and the brother-spirits use their cursed techniques to great effect. Additionally, they’re considered Yuji’s half-brothers due to visions that Choso had.
    • Cursed technique: Rot
    • Domain expansion: N/A
    • First appearance: Episode 22 (Kechizu), Episode 23 (Eso)

Finger-Bearer

PDF download Download Article
  1. The Finger-Bearer is a Special Grade Curse—the first Yuji fights after his initial encounter with Sukuna. And the Finger-Bearer possesses one of Sukuna’s fingers itself, using this amplified power to overwhelm Yuji, Megumi, and Nobara. Of course, Sukuna himself is still able to destroy the Finger-Bearer in a heartbeat with his Malevolent Shrine ability, proving just how powerful he is compared to Yuji (at least, at the time).
    • Cursed technique: N/A
    • Domain expansion: N/A
    • First appearance: Episode 4

Jiro Awasaka

PDF download Download Article
  1. Jiro enters the picture during the Shibuya Incident, using his “Inverse” cursed technique to reduce Yuji and Megumi’s powerful attacks to much weaker ones. Essentially, Inverse can weaken an attack in proportion to its original strength—but, on the other hand, it also amplifies weaker attacks into powerful ones. Thus, Yuji and Megumi do manage to defeat him, even though they have to work for it!
    • Cursed technique: Inverse
    • Domain expansion: N/A
    • First appearance: Episode 34

Nanako and Mimiko Hasaba

PDF download Download Article
  1. Nanako and Mimiko are twins with intense loyalty to Suguru Geto, the latter having rescued them from prejudiced humans as children. In Jujutsu Kaisen 0, the pair assist Geto as he orchestrates the “Night Parade of a Hundred Demons,” a jujutsu terrorist attack in Kyoto. In the main series, Nanako and Mimiko really only appear as Kenjaku’s enemies, resenting him for using Geto’s body.
    • Cursed technique: Unnamed (Nanako can manipulate subjects photographed with the camera on her cell phone, while Mimiko can hang targets using a noose and a doll)
    • Domain expansion: N/A
    • First appearance: Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie

Junpei Yoshino

PDF download Download Article
  1. Junpei is a tragic character: a regular human, no sorcery whatsoever, whom Yuji befriended. And even though Yuji’s friendship helps Junpei get to a slightly better place emotionally, Junpei is ultimately manipulated by Mahito and transformed into a living Curse. While he wasn’t a terribly powerful enemy for Yuji to fight, the fact that he was just a sad, bullied teen led down a dark road made defeating him especially bitter.
    • Cursed technique: Moon Dregs
    • Domain expansion: N/A
    • First appearance: Episode 8
