PDF download Download Article Listen to Podcast

If you’re experiencing JJK’s “Culling Game” arc for the first time with season three of the anime, you might want to know more about its most unique character: Fumihiko Takaba. From failed comedian to surprise jujutsu sorcerer, Takaba certainly has a unique journey on the show (and in the manga). In this article, we’ll introduce you to Takaba and his role in Jujutsu Kaisen—as well as his abilities, cursed technique, and overall personality!

An Intro to Fumihiko Takaba in Jujutsu Kaisen

Fumihiko Takaba is a jujutsu sorcerer from Jujutsu Kaisen’s “Culling Game” arc. He’s turned into a sorcerer by Kenjaku and joins the games despite refusing to take any lives. His cursed technique is “Comedian,” which he can use to amplify something he thinks is funny and manifest it into reality.

Who is Fumihiko Takaba in Jujutsu Kaisen?

  1. He’s featured in Jujutsu Kaisen’s Culling Game arc, having been a totally average human turned into a sorcerer through Kenjaku’s machinations. Although Takaba is just one of many people affected by Kenjaku’s actions, his abilities (and the way he uses them) make him stand out as a character.
    • In Jujutusu Kaisen, the “Culling Game” is a lethal battle royale competition orchestrated by Kenjaku (an ancient sorcerer).
    • Kenjaku creates and enforces the Game because he wants humanity to evolve through the use of cursed energy.

How does Fumihiko Takaba fit into JJK’s story?

PDF download Download Article
  1. He’s first introduced in JJK as a failing comedian struggling to make audiences laugh, to the point that even his manager tells him to quit comedy. While disheartened, Takaba doesn’t give up—yet soon after, he finds himself thrown into the Culling Game, and his circumstances change drastically.
    • Through Kenjaku’s schemes, Takaba finds himself newly imbued with sorcery powers. Instead of being frightened or cautious, he enters the games quite enthusiastically!
  2. His formal introduction to JJK is certainly memorable: in the Culling Game, Megumi is ambushed by Reggie Star and Iori Hazenoki. Although he’s determined not to kill anyone, Takaba quickly steps in, judging Star and Hazenoki to be cowards—and to everyone’s surprise, he handily defeats both attackers (while maintaining his comedic, playful disposition).
    • Through this encounter, Takaba wins Megumi’s respect—and shows off his considerable abilities, both in terms of fighting skills and sorcery powers.
  3. Eventually, Kenjaku himself becomes a threat during the Culling Game—and, of all the jujutsu sorcerers there, Angel (a reincarnated jujutsu sorcerer from the Heian Era) proposes that Takaba be the one to face off against him. Even though nobody has much faith in him, Takaba genially accepts the task and proceeds to confound Kenjaku with his unique “Comedian” cursed technique.[1]
    • During the fight, Takaba creates a stand-up comedy routine with Kenjaku, manifesting an audience as well.
    • Their “routine” strikes a chord with the audience, too—fulfilling Takaba’s longstanding desire to delight audiences with his comedy (and giving Yuta Okkotsu an opening to sneak up and kill Kenjaku).
    • That battle also leaves Takaba’s fate in question; it’s not clear if he survives or not. However, his fate is revealed much later in the manga, where he’s shown to have survived the fight!

Fumihiko Takaba’s Personality & Appearance

  1. Not only that, but he has a pretty unique way of navigating life. When forced into the Culling Game, he’s more or less unbothered by the situation—even though the Game is supposed to be lethal. He’s really the only person who finds his own jokes funny, and will keep cracking jokes even when nobody laughs (or when the situation is way too serious for joking).
    • Furthermore, Takaba doesn’t change his attitude to suit different situations; he’s always his ridiculous, comedic self.
    • People tend to find Takaba’s enthusiasm and energy confusing (and sometimes irritating), but for Takaba, it’s all in good fun.
  2. When Takaba was just a failing comedian, one of his co-workers encouraged him to keep trying to make it because, according to this coworker, the two types of comedians always in demand are the ones who are funny and the ones who believe they’re funny. Later, when Kenjaku tells Takaba that he can’t make everyone laugh, Takaba’s rebuttal is a promise to make Kenjaku laugh (even though the latter was trying to kill him).[2]
    • Takaba’s original reason for becoming a comedian was that he was lonely as a kid and wanted people to think he was funny.
    • So, no matter the situation, Takaba consistently tries to make things funny for the people around him (and is unfazed when he fails).
  3. His costume is a replica of one worn by the first superhero who made him laugh hysterically. It’s skintight—and, more strikingly, split right down the middle, leaving one arm, leg, and half of Takaba’s torso completely exposed. In the manga, Takaba even has a wardrobe malfunction every now and again (and when that happens, the exposed area is covered by a text bubble).
    • Takaba himself is tall, with slicked-back hair and sideburns. When he was a comedian, he wore a business suit and tie; he made the change to his current costume as a player in the Culling Game.

Fumihiko Takaba’s Powers in Jujutsu Kaisen

  1. He doesn’t come off as particularly powerful (with his overall silly disposition) and tends to take people by surprise, because the truth is that Takaba has a lot of cursed energy at his disposal, and his strength as a jujutsu sorcerer dramatically increases over the course of the Culling Game alone. Takaba is at his most powerful when he’s trying to entertain people—reflecting his comedy background.[3]
    • Multiple jujutsu sorcerers observe Takaba’s attacks during the Culling Game arc and acknowledge him as a dangerous opponent, including Reggie Star and Fushiguro.
  2. He doesn’t look like much of a physical fighter, but just as his sorcery is unexpectedly powerful, so are his combat skills. In a fight with Hazenoki (in the manga), Takaba took Hazenoki out with a drop-kick—and, in another encounter, parried his attacks before sending him sprawling with a roundhouse kick. And, on top of all that, Takeba was able to dodge many of Hazenoki’s attacks.
    • Takeba’s humor as a character comes not just from his actual jokes, but from the way he subverts just about everybody’s expectations of him!
  3. As already mentioned above, Takeba has high levels of cursed energy, and his signature cursed technique is based on his past career as a comedian. The “Comedian” technique allows Takeba to take something he thinks is funny and make it a reality, manifesting comedic scenarios and even incorporating feedback from other people’s thoughts.[4]
    • Additionally, the “Comedian” technique is very strongly based on confidence. If Takaba doubts his abilities while using them, the technique won’t work.

Why is Takaba important in Jujutsu Kaisen?

PDF download Download Article
  1. Generally speaking, the Culling Games are no joke—so the fact that Takaba approaches them with geniality and humor is remarkable in its own right. Then, there’s the fact that Takaba becomes a downright crucial ally for the main JJK characters participating in the Games, using his unique brand of sorcery to turn the tide of more than one battle.[5]
    • All in all, Takaba is a remarkable JJK character because of his unconventional nature. He doesn’t act like other jujutsu sorcerers, but he uses his unpredictability (and eccentric sense of humor) to excel nonetheless.
    • The fact that Takaba can not only hold his own against Kenjaku (an ancient, very powerful sorcerer) but amuse him just goes to show that he really is one-of-a-kind.
