Having the right pickaxe is an important part of progressing in The Forge. Stronger pickaxes let you mine bigger nodes, which gives you a better chance of snagging rare ores that you can use to craft valuable weapons and armor. We’re sharing the best pickaxe you can get on every island in The Forge—plus, our exclusive pickaxe progression guide will help you know what’s worth investing in, and what you can skip.

What is the best pickaxe in The Forge?

Currently, the best pickaxe in The Forge is the Kitsune Pickaxe. It’s available on Island 4, Crimson Sakura Isles. It costs $3,300,000, has 1000 Mining Power, and adds a +85% Luck Boost, making it easier to secure rare ores.

Best Pickaxes on Every Island in The Forge

  1. The Kitsune Pickaxe is currently the strongest pickaxe in the entire game. It’s a Legendary-level pickaxe that can be purchased from Miner Fred’s Pickaxe Shop. The Mine Power is unparalleled, and the speed and luck bonuses mean you’ll be powering through the strongest nodes in no time.
    • Price: $3,330,000
    • Mining Power: 1000
    • Luck Boost: +85%
    • Rune Slots: 3
  2. The Dragon Head Pickaxe is the strongest Pickaxe available in Frostspire. But as powerful as it is, we recommend skipping it—the Oni Pickaxe on the newly-introduced Island 4 actually costs a little less, and it has better mining power.
    • Price: $2,750,000
    • Mining Power: 750
    • Luck Boost: +78%
    • Rune Slots: 4

  3. This one is a little subjective—the Demonic, Magma, and Lightite pickaxes are all stronger options that are available on Island 2. But Mythril is a strong, versatile option for mid-to-late game play on Island 2. When it’s time to upgrade, you’re better off heading back to Island 1 to snag the Arcane Pickaxe.
    • Price: $67,500
    • Mining Power: 80
    • Luck Boost: +43%
    • Rune Slots: 2
  4. You probably won’t be able to afford the Arcane Pickaxe until you’re well into Island 2, but it’s worth coming back for once you’ve saved up. This is one of the best pickaxes for mid-game progression, and it’s an overall better value than some of the strongest pickaxes on Island 2.
    • Price: $125,000
    • Mining Power: 115
    • Luck Boost: +50%
    • Rune Slots: 3

Complete Pickaxe Progression Guide in The Forge

  1. This is the first pickaxe in the game, and you’ll receive it as part of the tutorial. It’s slow and basic, but don’t worry—you won’t carry it for long.[1]
    • Mining Power: 3
    • Node unlocked: Pebble
  2. As you progress through the tutorial, you’ll be required to upgrade to the Bronze Pickaxe. This pickaxe is stronger and mines faster, making the rest of the tutorial progress more rapidly.[2]
    • Mining Power: 7
    • Node unlocked: Rock
  3. Once you can afford it, switch to the Iron Pickaxe for improved mining. You can swing it faster and it’s more powerful, so you can break rocks more easily.
    • Mining Power: 10
    • Node unlocked: None, but it’s still worth the upgrade
  4. Skip the Gold Pickaxe ($1,500) and go straight to the Stonewake’s Pickaxe. It’s a little slow, but it’s so powerful that it balances out. You’ll also gain access to better ores, so you can earn more money from crafting.
    • Mining Power: 33
    • Node unlocked: Boulder
  5. Skip the Platinum Pickaxe ($5,000) on Island 1 and jump straight to the Cobalt Pickaxe when you unlock Island 2. It’s strong and powerful, and it gives you access to the nodes on the Forgotten Kingdom, which the Platinum won’t do.
    • Mining Power: 40
    • Node unlocked: Basalt Rock, Basalt Core
    • Note: Some players prefer to skip the Cobalt and save up for the Titanium, but if you’re only mining on Island 1, it can take a really long time to earn enough for the Titanium.
  6. The Titanium Pickaxe won’t give you access to new nodes, but we think it’s still worth the upgrade. The increase in mining power and a big luck boost will help you progress faster through Island 2.
    • Mining Power: 55
    • Node unlocked: None
  7. Skip the Uranium Pickaxe and save up until you can afford the Mythril Pickaxe. This will give you access to the larger nodes, so you’ll have a better chance of scoring the rarest ores available in the game up to this point. That will help you craft more valuable weapons and armor, which you can sell for a bigger profit.
    • Mining Power: 80
    • Node unlocked: Basalt Vein
  8. When you’re ready to upgrade your Mythril Pickaxe, teleport back to Island 1 to get the Arcane Pickaxe. It’s a better value than the stronger options on Island 2, and more than strong enough to carry you to Island 3.
    • Mining Power: 115
    • Node unlocked: Volcanic Rock
  9. If you have enough money by the time you get to Island 3, you can skip straight to the Mist Pickaxe—for $500,000, the 250 mining power and +15% mining speed feel like a big upgrade. But if you need something in the meantime, it’s fine to pick up the Tungsten or Aqua while you save up for the Mist.[3]
    • Mining Power: 250
    • Node unlocked: Crystal Node, Icy Pebble, Icy Rock
  10. The Snow Pickaxe is available to purchase after you complete Sensei Moro’s Quest 4 (“Patience Beneath Ice”). You’ll need it to complete Sensei Moro’s Quest 7 (“Whispers of Crystal”), so even though you won’t keep it for long, this is a must-have.[4]
    • Mining Power: 320
    • Node unlocked: None
  11. It can take a while to save up for the Prismatic Pickaxe, but it’s worth it. With 650 mining power, you’ll be able to break all the way up to Large Ice Crystals, so you can mine everything in Island 3.
    • Note: If it takes too long to earn enough money for the Prismatic, you can upgrade to the Frost Pickaxe in the meantime, but if you have time to grind, it’s fine to skip both the Frost and Void Pickaxes.
    • Mining Power: 650
    • Node unlocked: Icy Boulder, Small Ice Crystal, Medium Ice Crystal, Large Ice Crystal
  12. If you have the Prismatic Pickaxe, most of the new pickaxes on Island 4 will be a downgrade. The Holy Pickaxe is the first pickaxe that levels up from the Prismatic, but we recommend saving up for the Oni if you can—it costs a little more, but the power and luck make this one a good investment.
    • Note: The Heavenly Pickaxe and Dragon Head Pickaxe are both Island 3 upgrades from the Prismatic—but they both cost more than the Oni Pickaxe, and both have less Mining Power. We suggest skipping them.
    • Mining Power: 888
    • Node unlocked: Floating Crystal, Small Red Crystal, Medium Red Crystal, Large Red Crystal
  13. As of the Island 4 release, the Kitsune Pickaxe is currently the best pickaxe in The Forge. Unless a new Pickaxe drops while you’re saving up for the Kitsune, this is the ultimate combination of power, speed, and luck—you’re definitely going to want this one.
    • Mining Power: 1000
    • Node unlocked: Currently none

Unobtainable Pickaxes

  1. As of the Island 4 update, there’s only been one limited-time event with exclusive pickaxes—the Christmas Event. It’s over now, so you can’t get those pickaxes anymore. There’s also a dev-only pickaxe that’s not available to the public.
    • Candy Cane Pickaxe: With 280 Mining Power and +65% Luck Boost, this Christmas-themed pickaxe was a powerful mid-game option when it came out. It was available for 800 Xmas Tickets.[5]
    • Christmas Pickaxe: The Christmas Pickaxe has 550 Mining Power and a +72% Luck Boost. It was available for 3600 Xmas Tickets. At the time of the Christmas Event, only the Dragon Head and Prismatic Pickaxes were more powerful.[6]
    • Dev’s Bane: With 1500 Mining Power, it seems like everyone would want the Dev’s Bane Pickaxe. But it’s only available for the game’s developers, so unfortunately, this one isn’t obtainable in the game.[7]
