More Minecraft Fun Facts

  • Ghasts have a very specific sound. Ghasts are hostile, jellyfish-like mobs in Minecraft—but the sounds they make come from real-life creatures. Their “voices” are really recorded sounds made by cats!
  • Minecraft's creator has an in-game name. Markus Persson—the Swedish creator of Minecraft—also plays the game! His character’s name is “Notch.” When Notch gets killed in the game, he’ll drop an apple.
  • The creative process. Did you know that it only took 6 days to make the first version of Minecraft? Granted, it’s undergone a lot of changes since then—but making a virtual world in 6 days is still insanely impressive!
  • Creepers were an accident. While creating the game, “Notch” was actually trying to make pig mobs when he messed up—and the result was the weird-looking mob now known as a Creeper. After the mix-up, Notch decided to keep his mistake in the game, and thus, Creepers were born!
  • Endermen speak English. It may not sound like it, but their creepy babbling is actually in English—the sounds are just being played backwards.
  • Name in progress. Minecraft wasn’t always called “Minecraft.” While in development Persson called it “Cave Game”---and initially released it under the name “Cave Game” in 2009.
  • Sweden is pro-Minecraft. In Sweden, some kids are actually allowed to play Minecraft in school! The game is used to teach lessons about the environment, cities, and so on.
  • The world of Minecraft is enormous. You already know that if you’ve played the game—but do you know the actual scope of the game? Minecraft's virtual world (if it were brought into reality) would be bigger than Earth, and approximately the size of Neptune!
