    You may feel like you don’t belong. The lowest vertebra, sometimes known as L5, is sometimes associated with relationships and family. If you experience pain in this area, Potter says you may be lacking in support.[1] You may feel like you don’t belong in your family, that your family doesn’t relate to you on some level, or that you can’t find people who understand and accept you on a deep level.

    You might not feel comfortable expressing your emotions. The next vertebra, L4, represents emotions (especially grief), creativity, and how you hold joy with your community. If you grew up believing it’s unacceptable to express strong emotions, whether positive or negative, you may experience pain in this area.[2]

In addition to doing too much physical labor, you may find yourself bending over backward to help others or not knowing when to say no. You give so much of yourself to others that you don’t have time to take care of yourself.[4]

    • Understand that it’s okay to say no. You have to be able to take care of yourself before you can care for others!

    Reflect on what was going on in your life when the pain first started. Try to recall what your life was like when you first started experiencing lower back pain. Had you gone through a sudden life change? Did you have an argument with a family member? You may have some unchecked feelings regarding whatever you were going through. Figuring out what these feelings are and how to address them may help heal your pain. For example, ask yourself the following questions:
    • How connected do I feel to my spirituality right now?
    • What is the sense of meaning in my life?
    • Am I living in alignment with my values?
    • What is my larger “why” for my choices in my life?
    • What is my relationship to my sexuality? To joy or pleasure?
    • Is something in the way of me fully experiencing my life?
    • Note: If the pain started after a fall, car accident, or another injury, see a doctor immediately.

    Take care of yourself before others. If you’re experiencing back pain, it’s probably a sign that you need to slow down and take care of yourself: physically, mentally, and emotionally.
