What Makes Someone “Attractive”?

Attractiveness is largely subjective, and it sounds corny to say it, but beauty often is in the eye of the beholder.[1] However, there are a few physical characteristics and personality traits that many people consider to be attractive, including:

  • Confidence: There’s nothing more attractive than a genuinely confident, self-assured person! A confident (but not cocky) attitude shows that someone is deeply comfortable with themselves, and this is pretty darn alluring.
  • Humor: Many people look for a shared sense of humor in a potential partner, so the ability to get someone laughing can definitely be a major factor when it comes to attractiveness. Interestingly, though, research suggests that men and women experience this slightly differently—men tend to be more attracted to women who find them funny, while women tend to be more attracted to men who have the ability to make them laugh.[2]
  • Passion: When someone’s eyes light up as they talk about their career, interests, or hobbies, it’s totally intoxicating. People can’t help but be drawn to those who are completely invested in the things they do, so it’s pretty clear that passion is a super attractive trait!
  • Intelligence: Many people are drawn toward partners who are smart or knowledgeable, especially if they have lots of intellectual interests themselves. The ability to connect with someone over a book, philosophical theory, or favorite subject in school is totally priceless!
  • Kindness: Kindhearted people, rejoice! Studies suggest that kindness makes others perceive you as more physically attractive, while unkind behavior makes others perceive you as less physically attractive.
  • Hygiene: This one’s pretty simple, but it goes a long way. Grooming yourself well, wearing clean clothes, and making sure you smell good are all major parts of boosting your attractiveness in others’ eyes.
  • Symmetry: Symmetrical facial features are often considered conventionally attractive, and this has remained true across cultures and throughout history. It’s thought that this is because we subconsciously associate symmetry with good genes and physical health (but luckily, this isn’t true!).[3]
