Gaming expert Jose Rivera deep-dives into VALORANT’s lore, Agents, & gameplay
PDF download Download Article

VALORANT is a 5v5 tactical first-person shooter game that takes place in a near-future version of Earth. The game’s “lore” refers to the characters, places, and events that take place in-universe. Whether you’re a noob or an experienced player, keep reading. We spoke to gaming expert Jose Rivera to help explain everything you need to know about VALORANT’s plot, gameplay, and characters.

What is VALORANT about?

Gaming expert Jose Rivera says VALORANT begins with an event called First Light, which revealed Radianite, an energy source that grants powers. The event also split Earth into two (Alpha and Omega), creating the VALORANT Protocol, which is a group of agents who protect Alpha Earth.

VALORANT Backstory & Plot

  1. Rivera explains that “the world of VALORANT begins with an event called First Light.”[1] This cataclysmic event split Earth into two planets: Alpha Earth and Omega Earth. The specifics of First Light remain unknown, but it ushered in significant changes to life, technology, and governance across the planet. Its impact on Earth and its inhabitants shapes the backdrop of VALORANT.[2]
    • The First Light occurred due to a massive surge of energy that caused a worldwide blackout. When the lights came back on, cities lit up with glowing crystals, strange structures formed, and people began to develop supernatural abilities.

Jose Rivera is a gaming expert, social media strategist, and content creator. Known as Ricky Flicks online, he covers topics across gaming, anime, movies, and TV, and has generated 200M+ views across YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram.

  2. Rivera says First Light “bathed the planet in an energy source known as Radianite,” which “revolutionized science and technology, allowing for radical advancements in energy and weapons.” However, he adds that “it also had a colossal side effect: some humans gained supernatural powers. These gifted individuals became known as Radiants.”[3]
    • Radianite can be harnessed for energy, technology, weapons, and to augment human abilities.
    • Based on the VALORANT cinematic “Shattered,” the Omega agents are interested in Radianite to use it for life support, possibly for the planet. This is not confirmed, though.
    • Radiants are a minority within society, but are generally accepted during the time of the game’s events.
    • Radianite’s existence wasn’t completely unknown before First Light; a mysterious organization known as the Scions of Hourglass worked to keep its existence a secret.

  3. In the aftermath of First Light, Rivera says, “Kingdom Industries, a mega-corporation, monopolized Radianite production and distribution, effectively controlling three-quarters of the world’s energy.” He notes that “while some viewed the company as humanity’s savior, others saw them as exploiters of a dangerous resource.”[4]
    • Though Kingdom claimed to provide clean energy and advanced infrastructure, they secretly used Radiante for experiments and influenced governments using their power.[5]
    • The lore doesn’t specify the full extent of Kingdom’s involvement.
  4. Rivera explains that “a covert organization known as the VALORANT Protocol was formed to protect the planet from Radianite misuse and global disasters.”[6] The clandestine organization is composed of agents from diverse backgrounds, including Radiants and those wielding Radiant technology. The team maintains stability and protects against threats in this altered world.[7]
    • The VALORANT Protocol was formed by a shadowy individual known only as Brimstone. They are a global initiative that operates outside of traditional national alliances.
    • The earliest members of the Protocol include agents Brimstone, Viper, Omen, Sova, and Killjoy. We’ll explain who the VALORANT agents are in the VALORANT Agent Backstories section below.
    • VALORANT Legion is Omega Earth’s counterpart to VALORANT Protocol. They are one of the threats the Protocol protects against.
    • Some VALORANT agents used to work for Kingdom, while others have always opposed them.
  5. “As the story unfolds, a bigger twist emerges,” says Rivera, which reveals “the existence of a mirror universe known as Omega Earth, home to alternate versions of every Agent.” He explains that “the two worlds, Alpha and Omega, are locked in conflict, each fighting to preserve its own survival by securing Radianite supplies. Major events like The Venice Incident (which lifted an entire section of the city into the sky) and map settings like Ascent or Fracture directly tie to these catastrophic, interdimensional wars.”[8]
    • The Alpha Earth agents’ goal is to protect the people from Radianite, while Omega Earth agents go to Alpha Earth to steal more.
    • Rivera notes that “at first glance, VALORANT looks like a fast-paced tactical shooter in the style of Counter-Strike, but beneath the headshots lies a surprisingly deep sci-fi mythos.”[9]
    • He explains that “Riot Games crafted a universe rich with mystery, conspiracy, and dual realities, where each map, cinematic, and Agent voice line builds toward a sprawling narrative about survival, identity, and parallel worlds.”[10]

VALORANT Gameplay

PDF download Download Article
  1. As Rivera puts it, “The key selling point of VALORANT lies in how its story doesn’t stay in the background; it informs every element of gameplay.”[11] As you play the game, you’ll learn details about the VALORANT world through cinematics, agent trailers, and maps. Here’s Rivera’s take on how lore shapes gameplay in VALORANT:
    • Cinematics and Updates: “Riot expands the story through the animated shorts, Agent interactions, and in-game dialogue. Even pre-match chatter between Agents often contains hints about past betrayals or alternate timelines,” Rivera says.[12]
    • Maps: “Maps like Ascent, Split, and Fracture aren’t random arenas, they’re canon locations with environmental clues and easter eggs [that] hint at past events, ongoing experiments, and Omega incursions,” Rivera says.[13]
      • For example, the Ascent map on Alpha Earth marks major lore moments. A VALORANT trailer displayed the “Venice Incident,” in which Alpha Phoenix and Omega Jett brawled and caused a Radianite explosion that turned the city into floating ruins.
    • Abilities: “Every ability connects to the Agent’s identity. Radiants use elemental or psychic powers, while tech-based Agents rely on gadgets reflecting their culture or training. Phoenix’s fire and Sage’s healing both speak to their personal philosophies of risk and preservation,” Rivera explains.[14]
    • Mirror Matches: “When two teams play as the same Agents, it’s not a lore oversight; it represents battles between Alpha and Omega Earth, each side fighting for its world’s future,” Rivera notes.[15]
    • As for the core gameplay, VALORANT involves one team seeking to detonate a spike and steal surrounding Radianite, while the other defends their homeland.
    • Note: Not every aspect of gameplay is related to the game’s lore. The fights played by players are not canon and have no effect on the lore.

VALORANT Agents Overview

PDF download Download Article
  1. As of October 2025, Rivera says there are 29 Agents in the game. He explains that “each Agent in VALORANT represents a different corner of the globe,” and they are each “equipped with distinct powers and philosophies shaped by Radianite.” The Agents are divided into 2 broad categories:[16]
    • Radiants: Rivera says these are “humans born with innate powers derived from Radianite (e.g., Jett, Phoenix, Reyna, Sage).”[17]
    • Tech-enhanced Agents: Rivera explains that these are “operatives who use advanced gadgets and weaponry to mimic Radiant abilities (e.g., Brimstone, Killjoy, Cypher).”[18]
    • Agents are also split into 4 different classes, which further define their abilities. We’ll go over each class and each agent’s backstory in the section below.
    • Note: While there are 29 Agents, only 28 are playable. Agent 08 is missing from the game and shrouded in mystery. As of now, it's unclear if they'll eventually be added to the game.[19]

VALORANT Agent Backstories

PDF download Download Article
  1. Agents are playable characters in VALORANT, and each is a part of one of 4 classes. Duelists are self-sufficient fraggers who are expected to get high frags (kills) and seek out engagements first. Agents under this role have abilities that allow them to focus on being the first to enter sites and engage with enemies. Here’s a list of all the current duelists:[20]
    • Phoenix: A Radiant and cocky duelist from the UK, says Rivera. Phoenix “controls fire, symbolizing youthful bravado and the risk of overconfidence.”[21]
    • Raze: A Brazilian demolition expert who wreaks havoc with explosive gadgets like her rocket launcher, Boom Bots, and Blast Packs.
    • Jett: A South Korean Radiant duelist known as the master of skies. Rivera says she’s “agile and unpredictable” and “commands wind to dominate the battlefield.”[22]
    • ISO: A versatile Chinese fixer who excels in dismantling opposition with his adaptability and strategic prowess. He was initially ordered to assassinate Omen by the Scions of Hourglass, but ended up joining the VALORANT Protocol instead.
    • Yoru: A Japanese Radiant, known as the master of deception, who can manipulate reality with rifts and mirror images to confuse his enemies.
    • Reyna: A Mexican duelist who can use soul orbs to heal herself and become invulnerable. She is a Radiant who is a dark and ethereal force on the battlefield.
    • Waylay: A Thai Radiant who can transform into light. She uses her speed of light abilities to strike down enemies without knowing what hit them.
  2. Initiators challenge angles by setting up their team to enter contested ground and push defenders away. Agents with this role focus on initiating attacks on-site and flushing out hidden enemies to assist their team when charging into battle. Here are the current initiators:[23]
    • Skye: A versatile support agent from Australia who uses trinkets and animals to heal allies and track enemies. She is also a Radiant.
    • Fade: A Turkish bounty hunter who uses dark mist and illusions to disorient and control her enemies. She is also a Radiant.
    • Gekko: An agent from Los Angeles who commands a group of mischievous creatures whose energy disrupts enemy formations.
    • Neon: A Filipino Radiant who harnesses the power of electricity to blind and incapacitate her opponents while enhancing her speed and strength.
    • KAY/O: KAY/O is a robotic powerhouse that kills Radiants using flash and explosive grenades to suppress their enemies.
    • Breach: A Swedish bionic whose powerful energy waves blind and disorient his enemies.
    • Sova: A Russian reconnaissance pro who uses drones and arrows to gather intel and disrupt enemy movement.
    • Tejo: A Colombian veteran intelligence consultant whose ballistic guidance system and targeted strikes force his enemies to abandon their ground.
  3. Controllers are experts at cutting through dangerous territory to set their team up for success. They assist their teammates by cutting enemy vision, taking control of an area, and forcing enemies into choke points. Here are all the current controllers:[24]
    • Harbor: An Indian controller who commands the power of the ocean and uses waves and geysers to protect allies and disorient enemies.
    • Viper: An American chemist who uses poison clouds and toxins to disorient and damage her enemies. She seems to know more about Omen and his backstory than she lets on.
    • Brimstone: An American controller who is a ruthless attacker, using grenades and smoke clouds to control space and bombard enemies. Rivera explains that he is “a tactical leader and founding member of the [VALORANT] Protocol, bringing military precision and grounded realism.”[25]
    • Clove: A Scottish controller who is also the newest VALORANT agent. She is immortal, defying death with abilities that manipulate essence and project vision.
    • Astra: A Ghanian who wields cosmic power, manipulating stars to control the battlefield and shape the course of the match. She is the only known Astral Guardian on Alpha and Omega Earth, and she is also a Radiant.
    • Omen: “A spectral figure possibly born from a Radianite experiment gone wrong; his fragmented dialogue hints at tragic origins,” says Rivera.[26] He’s a Radiant who uses orbs and teleportation. He was initially sent to assassinate Viper due to her work as a Radianite chemist, but ended up joining the VALORANT Protocol. His memories from before Viper’s assassination attempt were wiped, so they have a tense relationship.
  4. Sentinels are defensive experts who can lock down areas and watch flanks, both on attacker and defender rounds. Their focus is on defensive play, and they support the rest of the team by providing intel, anchoring down sites, and preventing the enemy from flanking. Here are the current sentinels:[27]
    • Killjoy: A German “tech prodigy who defends the team with automated turrets and radiant inventions,” says Rivera.[28] Her nanoswarms and alarmbots can control enemy movements and lockdown areas
    • Cypher: A Moroccan agent who is the go-to for enemy information; he has a robust surveillance network and is always watching.
    • Deadlock: A Norwegian operative specializing in securing areas and neutralizing threats with advanced nanotechnology. After losing her arm in a mission, she befriended Killjoy, who made her a prosthetic. Rivera says her addition “reflect[s] Riot’s growing focus on geopolitical diversity and posthuman themes.”[29]
    • Chamber: A French weapon designer whose versatile skillset ranges from scanning traps to summoning powerful weapons and creating teleportation anchors.
    • Sage: A Chinese Radiant, who Rivera says is “a healer and protector, often seen as the VALORANT Protocol’s moral compass.”[30] She controls the battlefield with barriers and slowing fields.
    • Vyse: A metallic Radiant whose origins are unknown. She uses the Radianite-infused metal in her body to trap and disarm enemies.
    • Veto: A Senegalese Radiant with a powerful DNA mutation that nullifies his enemies' powers and technology.
