What is the Autobots symbol?

  1. Trash Pickins says the Autobots symbol is actually the face of a first generation toy called Prowl.[1] Prowl normally takes the shape of a police car. Prowl has a notable crest, visor, and face, so the designers simplified it into the iconic Autobots logo.[2]
    • According to Trash Pickins, no one really knows why the designers decided to make that face the official symbol.[3]
    • “They used Soundwave for the Decepticon symbol,” Trash Pickins notes. “You would think they would use the respective leaders for the symbols, but no. Maybe Prowl and Soundwave looked cooler or were easier to stylize into a symbol.”[4]
    • The Autobots symbol is usually red, but it has also appeared in silver or metallic colors.
    • The original Autobots logo appeared on the Transformers toys, animated series, and the original run of Marvel Comics.

What does the Autobots symbol mean?

  1. When the original Transformers toys were first created, Hasbro needed a way to differentiate the heroes from the villains. All the heroes who protect the galaxy have the Autobots logo somewhere on their body, while the evil faction of Transformers were given the Decepticon symbol.
    • Trash Pickins says, “Some people like to think that the symbol is just a generic Autobot face rather than some godlike being. The Autobots stand for the good of all, so having a symbol that allows anyone to see themselves in it ends up being very powerful.”[5]

  1. In the 2005 continuity from the IDW run of comics, a character named Onyx Prime designed the insignia to represent the alliance he made with Alpha Trion. In the canon, he claims that the design was based on a description he heard about Primus.[6]
    • “In terms of how it's explained in the Transformers universe, there are different stories and universes that attribute it to different beings,” according to Trash Pickins. “Some examples are Primus, the creator of the Transformers and Vector Prime, the first Autobot.”[7]

Autobot Symbol Variations

  1. During one of the third season’s premiere episodes of the Transformers animated series, an ancient Quintesson robot has an early Autobots symbol marked on their forehead. The logo has the outline of a shield and other linework that looks like the top half of the current logo.[8]
  2. The War Within miniseries of comics focuses on the Transformers before they arrived on Earth. Their Autobots logo has white accent lines, red eyes, and a more rounded chin than the original logo.[9]
  3. The second generation of Transformers toys and Marvel Comics introduced a new Autoboy logo that looked more like Optimus Prime’s head. This didn’t stick around long, and later generations of the toys reverted back to one that looks closer to the original.
  4. Transtech was a cancelled storyline for the Transformers in the early 2000s, but some of the art was still released to the public. This Autobots logo looked completely different from the others, and had a shield-like appearance that resembled armor.[10]
  5. When the live-action movie came out in 2007, the Autobots logo looked almost exactly like the original. The only thing that changed was the angles above the eyes to make them look angrier.
  6. Shattered Glass was a set of Transformers comics and stories where Autobots were evil and Decepticons were the heroes. In this series, the Autobots logo switched to purple instead of its normal red color.[11]

  1. The Decepticons are evil Transformers led by Megatron, and it’s their goal to conquer worlds and collect Energon from across the universe. All of the Decepticons have the purple triangular logo that looks like an angry Transformer printed somewhere on their body.
  2. Soundwave was one of the original Transformers released during the first generation, and he is one of Megatron’s evil soldiers. The top of Soundwave’s crest was simplified into the iconic Decepticon insignia to represent the entire faction.[12]
  3. In the 2024 animated movie lore, D-16 loves Megatronus Prime because he’s the strongest of the Primes, and wears a decal of his head. Throughout the movie, D-16 turns evil and becomes Megatron, using a simplified version of the decal as the new logo for the Decepticons.[13]

    • Maximals are typically considered heroic and have a red logo like the Autobots.
  3. Predacons are similar to Maximals, but they usually change into reptiles or insects when they transform. The Predacon logo looks like a blue or purple insect head with antennae, pincers, and large eyes.[16]
  4. Star Seekers are space pirates that hunt down other Cybertronians. Their logo is green and looks like a mix between the Decepticon and Autobots logos. Most notably, the logo has 2 crossed swords below the face.[17]
  5. Wreckers are types of Autobots, and they’re usually the strongest ones that finish the job. The logo has a more defined top half with a hammer shape in the middle. Instead of red, the Wreckers logo is blue.[18]
  6. During the first generation of Transformers media, Shockwave discovers a symbol used by ancient Cybertronians. The brown insignia has the same shape as the Autobots logo, but a triangular shape similar to the Decepticons appears on the bottom half.
