  1. The most recognizable symbol from Sailor Moon is, of course, the moon! In the series, this moon symbol resembles a gold crescent moon that’s turned onto its side. While most closely associated with the anime’s titular character, Sailor Moon, the crescent symbol is also worn by all noble members of the Moon Kingdom and all of the Moon cats (both in their human and feline forms).[1] Sailor V also sometimes wears the moon symbol, since she serves as a decoy Moon Princess in parts of the Sailor Moon series.[2]
    • Symbolism: The crescent moon symbol represents the royal lineage of the Moon Kingdom and its legacy as the guardian of the Earth, as well as power, destiny, protection, and new beginnings.
  2. The Mercury symbol is worn exclusively by Sailor Mercury, who’s also known as Ami Mizuno. Sailor Mercury is a member of the Sailor Guardians who represents wisdom and the planet Mercury. She’s often referred to as the “brains” of the group, due to her genius-level intelligence and computer skills, but she also possesses water and ice powers. For example, she can manipulate bodies of water and create fog or smoke screens. Her symbol, representing the planet Mercury, is a blue circle with a small cross below and a small semicircle above.[3] This design actually comes from the ancient astrological glyph for Mercury.[4]
    • Symbolism: The Mercury symbol represents the planet Mercury as well as water, wisdom, intelligence, and strategy.

  3. The Mars symbol is worn by Sailor Mars, or Rei Hino. Sailor Mars serves as the guardian of fire and passion, and she’s also a priestess-warrior who has psychic and fire-manipulation powers. Her symbol—which appears on her forehead, tiara, and brooch—is made up of a reddish-pink circle with an arrow emerging from its top-right edge.[5] This symbol is the same as Mars’ ancient planetary symbol, which represents the shield and spear of the same-named Roman god of war.[6]
    • Symbolism: The Mars symbol represents the planet Mars, as well as passion, fire, psychic abilities, and the duties of warriors and priestesses.
  4. In Sailor Moon, the Jupiter symbol is used by Sailor Jupiter, aka Makoto Kino, who is able to control thunder, lightning, and plants. Her bright green symbol looks like a stylized version of the number 4, and it appears on her forehead during transformation sequences.[7] This design is the same as the astrological symbol for the Roman god Jupiter.[8]
    • Symbolism: The Jupiter symbol represents the planet Jupiter, as well as lightning, eagles, raw power, protection, nature, and nurture.
  5. The Venus symbol is worn by Sailor Venus, whose civilian name is Minako Aino (or Mina). Sailor Venus is the leader of the Inner Sailor Guardians, and she’s also the first of the group to awaken her powers. All of her powers correspond to love, beauty, and light—for example, her Venus Love-Me Chain is a powerful energy whip. Sailor Venus’ symbol, which appears on her forehead and tiara during transformations, is made up of a yellow circle with a cross on the bottom.[9] This design is borrowed from the traditional Venus symbol that was used to represent the Roman goddess of love and beauty.[10]
    • Symbolism: The Venus symbol represents the planet Venus, as well as love, beauty, and femininity.

  6. The Pluto symbol is worn only by Sailor Pluto, also known as Setsuna Meiou. Sailor Pluto is the guardian of the Space-Time door and a key member of the Outer Sailor Senshi (meaning she defends the solar system from external threats). She can manipulate time and space, teleport, open rifts, and create shields. Her symbol, meanwhile, is a deep red or purple combination of the letters “P” and “L.”[11] This design is actually the same as the Planet’s real astronomical symbol.[12]
    • Symbolism: The Pluto symbol represents the planet Pluto, as well as space, time, isolation, death, and darkness.
  7. The Neptune symbol is worn by Sailor Neptune, aka Michiru Kaiou. Sailor Neptune is the Soldier of the Deep Seas, and she’s best known for her calm nature, her mastery over the violin, and her powers of precognition and seawater manipulation. Sailor Neptune’s symbol is a blue trident, made up of a cross at the bottom with three pointed prongs at the top.[13] This symbol’s design correlates to Neptune, the Roman god of the sea, who famously used a trident as his main weapon.[14]
    • Symbolism: The Neptune symbol represents the planet Neptune, as well as the sea, power, intuition, and mysticism.
  8. Sailor Uranus, or Haruka Tenou, wears the Uranus symbol in Sailor Moon. Sailor Uranus is called the Soldier of the Wind, and she’s a fiercely independent character with control over the wind and sky. She also has precognition and superhuman strength, speed, and agility. Her symbol is a yellow circle with a line extending from the top that ends in a smaller, filled-in circle. From either side of this line, there are two additional short, T-shaped lines.[15] This symbol’s design is derived from the planet Uranus’ actual astronomical symbol.[16]
    • Symbolism: The Uranus symbol represents the planet Uranus, as well as wind, the sky, earthquakes, and a connection to the heavens.
  9. The Saturn symbol is worn by Sailor Saturn, whose civilian name is Hotaru Tomoe. She is an Outer Sailor Guardian who’s tasked with protecting the solar system from external forces, and she’s associated with ruin, rebirth, silence, and destruction. She also wields the Silence Glaive, which can wipe a planet or world clean to allow for rebirth. Sailor Saturn’s symbol is a purple mark that looks like a tall cross with an upside-down U-shaped line coming out of the right side.[17] This symbol is the official astronomical symbol for the planet Saturn, which depicts a stylized sickle or scythe (the main tool of the Roman god Saturn).[18]
    • Symbolism: The Saturn symbol represents the planet Saturn, as well as destruction, silence, death, rebirth, and the void.
  10. In Sailor Moon, the Black Moon symbol is a black crescent moon turned on its side, serving as the direct opposite of the Moon Kingdom’s golden crescent. The Black Moon is worn by the Black Moon clan, an evil and villainous group that includes key antagonists like Prince Demande, Saphir, and the Wiseman. When worn on a character’s forehead or as jewelry, it signifies their allegiance to the dark planet Nemesis and the powers that that planet grants them.[19]
    • Symbolism: The Black Moon symbol represents evil, negativity, and the corrupted nature of the Nemesis planet and its native Black Moon Clan.
