PDF download Download Article

When it comes to cinema, it’s never been as popular as it is today, and that’s partially thanks to the joy that is the Internet. With this popularity, it’s no wonder that the slang term kino is popular. If you’re unfamiliar with the term, it’s basically a way to refer to a good movie, but it’s also much more than that. Read on to learn what kino means, where it comes from, and more!

Kino Meaning

Slang expert Jemaree Jay says “kino” is used to describe something that’s cinematic. It is short for “kinography” and is used both ironically and unironically. When used ironically, “kino” refers to films that viewers find pretentious or elitist, even though they are often beloved by the mainstream.

  1. Short for “kinography,” the slang term kino is used to describe when something is cinematic, says Jay.[1] It usually refers to films, TV shows, and other visual media that are incredibly outstanding, often to the highest degree. It’s the highest praise a chronically online user can give to a piece of media, but beware, as it’s often used ironically to refer to mainstream popular cinema viewers find pretentious.[2]

How “Kino” Is Used Online

  1. Although the term originated as a way to refer to films that viewers considered high art, over time, it’s come to be used ironically to refer to films that they view as overly cinematic, pretentious, or elitist. For example, if you’re scrolling on 4Chan or Reddit, you may find users calling Martin Scorsese’s films “absolute kino.”[4]
    • Example: “Bro, did you see that new Marty Supreme movie? Totaaallly kino… 😂”
    • Example: “Everyone’s all over that new Superman movie. It must be absolute kino 😭”
  2. Kino isn’t only used ironically; there are plenty of people who genuinely use it to refer to films and media they find to be the highest caliber of art. It may not be as common in online forums due to the prevalence of the ironic usage, but that doesn’t mean it’s unpopular.[5]
    • Example: “I just got a chance to check out Sinners, and man, that’s actually kino. I’d rewatch a million times if I could.”
    • Example:The Minecraft Movie was genuinely kino. Best movie of the year, and no, I won’t explain why.”

Where “Kino” Comes From

  1. The popular forum site 4Chan is responsible for a lot of modern slang, and kino is no exception. The term originated as a part of a ranking system that classified films into 6 categories, with kino being the highest rank, followed by cinema, film, movie, flick, and joint.[6]
    • After this ranking system was invented in 2014, it spread in the following years, with people using kino to talk about artistic movies they considered the pinnacle of film (both ironically and unironically).
    • Although the ranking system was posted jokingly, the slang term is used as both a meme and a genuine classification of films.
  2. At the beginning of the 1929 film, Man with a Movie Camera, a statement described the work as kinography, saying “This new experimental work by Kino-Eye is directed towards the creation of an authentically international absolute language of cinema – ABSOLUTE KINOGRAPHY – on the basis of its complete separation from the language of theatre and literature.”[7]
    • Although the term emerged in 1929, it didn’t see major traction until the following century.

Doomer Doomer originated on 4Chan as a way to refer to Millennials and Gen Z’ers who are extremely pessimistic about the future, often to the point where they believe we’re doomed as a people. Doomers are often fueled by anxiety, obsessive thinking, and excessive doomscrolling, contributing to their belief that society as we know it is doomed.[8]
  2. 2
Based While “based” didn’t originate on 4Chan, the term was popularized through the site after being adopted from rapper Lil B The Based God. The term refers to someone who’s confidently, unapologetically true to themselves, regardless of whether or not their beliefs and opinions align with the popular, mainstream beliefs and opinions.[9]
  3. 3
Hagmaxxing Hagmaxxing refers to younger people (typically men) intentionally dating older people due to perceived benefits, maturity, and status. It also refers to people intentionally leaning into their older age, with this meaning originating from a 4Chan post on /r9k/ that read “I don’t care about looking old. Im hagmaxxing.”[10]
    • When it comes to leaning into your age, hagmaxxing involves doing “old-person” activities, like sitting on the porch, staying indoors, and taking life slowly.
  4. 4
Soy Boy The slang term “soy boy” originated in right-wing 4Chan forums and is often used as an insult for men who are perceived as weak, feminine, or emasculated. It refers to men who don’t fall into the traditional definition of masculinity as defined by right-wing 4Chan users.[11]
