Understand Raccoon City Syndrome & how it affects Leon Kennedy
PDF download Download Article

Leon Scott Kennedy, infected by one of Umbrella’s viruses? It’s more likely than you think. One of the few spoilers revealed before the launch of Resident Evil Requiem is Leon’s infection; he’s shown to have markings on his hands that resemble those of other people infected with the t-Virus. But how did it happen? We’ll explain everything! In this article, we’ll unpack how and why Leon (as well as Sherry Birkin) got infected with the virus—and how his story unfolds in Requiem.

Be aware that there are more spoilers for the game ahead!

How Leon & Sherry Get Infected in Resident Evil Requiem

Leon Kennedy and Sherry Birkin were infected with “Raccoon City Syndrome,” a modified strain of the t-Virus that remained dormant for decades. They were exposed during the Raccoon City Incident of 1998 and carried the virus for the next 28 years. In Requiem, the virus has activated and is finally showing symptoms.

How does Leon get infected in Resident Evil Requiem?

  1. In actuality, the infection is a dormant, modified Epsilon strain of the t-Virus—the same disease that spread across Racoon City in Resident Evil 2, leading to the city’s destruction. This particular strain remained in the bodies of those exposed to it for decades, eventually evolving to adapt (and evade) the hosts’ antibodies.[1]
    • Dr. Victor Gideon (Requiem’s main antagonist) studies the disease and is the one who dubs it “Raccoon City Syndrome.”
  2. All individuals affected by this t-Virus strain (AKA Raccoon City Syndrome) are survivors of the Raccoon City Incident in 1998. They were exposed to the virus during that time, and their infections were never fully suppressed or even detected. While it isn’t specified exactly how they were exposed, the t-Virus strain likely could’ve spread in many ways.[2]
    • Most often, the t-Virus is spread via saliva from zombie bites—but this strain is different.
    • In Leon and Sherry’s cases (as well as the other people who were infected), for instance, they may have been exposed to airborne particles, contaminated sewer water, or infected zombie blood during the Incident.
    • The Raccoon City Syndrome strain remained dormant for nearly three decades. Requiem, which takes place 28 years after the Incident, follows Leon’s investigation into the mysterious infection.

Raccoon City Syndrome in Resident Evil Requiem

  1. 0 through 3. As noted in Requiem, those infected with Raccoon City Syndrome don’t show symptoms for a long time—but, once they do, the disease progresses in identifiable stages. While playing as Leon, you can actually see the t-Virus’s progression; it becomes more and more evident as the game goes on (and takes a greater toll on Leon).[3]
    • Stage 0: Dormant - During this stage, the t-Virus is totally (albeit temporarily) dormant within the host’s body, suppressed by specific types of antibodies. However, the virus gradually builds an immunity to those antibodies.
    • Stage 1: Activation - Once the virus becomes active (having become immune to the antibodies), black marks resembling bruises begin to appear on the body. Additionally, the infected suffer from mild symptoms, including a cough.
    • Stage 2: Development - During this stage, the virus’s black marks begin to spread further, and affected areas grow numb. This can expand to affect internal organs (which, in some cases, causes hematemesis).
    • Stage 3: Terminal - At this stage, the infected person’s death is imminent (usually within 1 to 2 hours). Black marks spread across the entire body, coupled with severe pain, fatigue, and vomiting of blood.
  2. Although it’s shown to remain dormant for a long time, Raccoon City Syndrome is highly virulent after its dormancy ends. Leon’s infection becomes evident sometime before October 2026, and by the time his investigation takes him to Wrenwood, it’s progressing rapidly—Leon has black marks on his hands, neck, and later across much of his body.[4]
    • Raccoon City Syndrome is so deadly that even Sherry Birkin—who has G-virus antibodies—was infected, although her infection seemingly progressed more slowly than Leon’s.
  3. Later on in Requiem, FBI analyst Grace Ashcroft administers the Elpis antivirus to Leon, leading to his recovery. As virulent and deadly as Raccoon City Syndrome is, it’s still part of the Progenitor viral family and thus could be eradicated by Elpis. Interestingly, victims of Raccoon City Syndrome don’t reanimate as zombies (even though it’s a strain of t-Virus). Those infected include:[5]
    • Leon S. Kennedy (cured)
    • Sherry Birkin (cured)
    • Zeno (deceased)
    • Michael Warren (deceased)
    • E. Wilkins (deceased)
    • H. Ramirez (deceased)
    • K. White (deceased)
    • Wrenwood hotel victim (unnamed, deceased)
    • Elbridge victim (unnamed, deceased)
    • Connections Commander (unnamed, eliminated by Leon)

Leon’s Journey with Raccoon City Syndrome in Requiem

PDF download Download Article
  1. By October 2026, Leon had begun to show symptoms of the deadly illness, and a string of other people—mainly survivors of the Raccoon City Incident in 1998—had already died. At the time, nothing was known about the disease except for the connection between victims. In the game, Leon travels to the city of Wrenwood, looking for suspect Victor Gideon, a former t-Virus researcher for Umbrella.
    • At the beginning of the game, five Raccoon City survivors have died due to the disease, with the most recent found in the abandoned Wrenwood Hotel.
    • Leon encounters Gideon leaving the hotel with Grace Ashcroft (Gideon having kidnapped Grace) and tries to stop him, but Gideon gets away after infecting random civilians with the t-Virus.
    • A small outbreak of zombies (due to the t-Virus) occurs, but Leon quickly contains it.
  2. After quelling the outbreak, fellow DSO agent Sherry Birkin directs Leon to the facility, which Gideon bought after Umbrella was shut down (back in 2004). Not long after he arrives at Rhodes Hill, the entire facility is revealed to have fallen to “mass hysteria” (in actuality, the t-Virus), and Leon is captured by Gideon himself.
    • Gideon attempts to interrogate Leon, though Leon quickly manages to break free—forcing Gideon to flee.
    • While investigating the facility, Leon uncovers Gideon’s research on Raccoon City Syndrome, discovering the truth behind it (that it’s a strain of the t-Virus, meaning Leon and Sherry are both infected).
    • Leon also uncovers some vague clues about “Elpis,” a mysterious keyword associated with Grace Ashcroft.
  3. He helps Grace and a young girl, Emily, escape the main building and into the water treatment facility, remaining behind to stop the Rhodes Hill zombies from following. However, Grace is soon taken to the ruins of Raccoon City by Gideon; Leon follows, aiming to save Grace and figure out her connection to “Elpis.”
    • Along the way, Leon and Sherry are ordered to terminate their investigation; the two effectively go rogue, with Sherry insisting on continuing to help Leon no matter the consequences.
  4. In the ruins of Raccoon City, he’s forced to fight Gideon (with Gideon falling into a chasm) and then deal with a T-501 Tyrant (similar to the one that pursued him in Resident Evil 2). His search leads him to ARK, a private laboratory formerly belonging to Oswell E. Spencer, the founder of the Umbrella Corporation. ARK is supposed to be the home of Elpis, which Leon believes to be Spencer’s final virus.
    • Leon discovers the entrance to ARK in the Raccoon City Orphanage. In the process, he’s attacked by monstrous seedlings grown from Plant 43 (a plant specimen infected with the virus).
  5. After finding Grace in ARK, Leon is determined to destroy Elpis and stop Gideon from releasing it. However, after seeing old footage of her mother and Spencer, Grace has a different hunch about it and ultimately decides to release Elpis, leading to the discovery that Elpis is, in fact, an antiviral agent made to cure Umbrella’s viruses.
    • Requiem actually has two possible endings; players can, as Grace, decide to release or destroy Elpis. However, releasing Elpis is considered the canon ending.
    • In other words, future Resident Evil installments will go by that version of events (not the version in which Elpis is destroyed and Leon dies).
  6. Leon is forced to battle a gigantic, mutated Gideon one last time, having been freshly cured of his stage-3 infection with Elpis. Afterward, he and Grace are rescued by BSAA agents sent by Chris Redfield. Now armed with Elpis, Leon is able to cure Sherry, while Grace saves Emily. The two remain friends, both miraculously surviving their ordeal.
    • Even though Leon reached stage 3 of the Raccoon City Syndrome infection and was close to death, the Elpis antivirus was very fast-acting; Leon recovered much of his strength just minutes after being injected.

What other secrets about Leon does Requiem reveal?

PDF download Download Article
  1. Concept art of Leon’s hands released by Capcom shows him wearing a ring on his finger, implying that he’s married. Additionally, fans point to a scene at the end of Requiem in which Leon, while walking away, pulls something out of his pocket and seemingly puts it on his finger. Although it’s impossible to see a ring, since Leon’s back is turned, his movements match those of someone putting a ring on their finger.[6]
    • Capcom has not officially confirmed Leon’s relationship status or who he’s married to (if he’s married at all). He might not be married—but many fans think he is.
    • Leon has been a fan-favorite Resident Evil character for a long time, so the idea that he might be married has caused lots of excitement!
  2. The most popular theories suggest that he’s married to either Ada Wong or Claire Redfield. Ada is a mercenary who encounters Leon during several adventures, including Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 4. They flirt with each other, although Ada is pretty evasive. Meanwhile, Claire is a fellow survivor in RE2 who befriends Leon. The two have worked together many times since, even caring for Sherry Birkin together after they saved her from Raccoon City as a child.[7]
    • Again, Capcom hasn’t commented on whether Leon is actually married, let alone who his partner might be.
    • Fans simply agree that Ada and Claire are the most likely suspects, having been through a lot with Leon over the years.
