Happy Ghasts are a passive version of the Ghast mobs you can find in the Nether. The way you get a tamed Happy Ghast is a bit different from how you tame other creatures in the game, however. In this article, we'll go over how to raise a Happy Ghast from Ghastling to adult, plus we'll go over some Happy Ghast FAQs. Read on to learn more!

How to Tame a Happy Ghast

To tame a Happy Ghast, you first have to rehydrate a Dried Ghast block in water. The Dried Ghast block will turn into a Ghastling, which will grow into a Happy Ghast after 20 minutes. You can speed up the growth process by feeding the Ghastling Snowballs.

  1. Dried Ghast blocks can be obtained in a few ways:[1]
    • Mining: You can mine a Dried Ghast by hand or with any tool. It will always drop itself. You don't need Silk Touch or any other enhancements to get one. You can often find Dried Ghasts by Nether Fossils.
    • Crafting: A Dried Ghast block can be made by combining 8 Ghast Tears and 1 Soul Sand. Ghast Tears are dropped by Ghasts, and Soul Sand can be mined in the Nether.
    • Trading: Piglins have about a 2% chance to trade a Dried Ghast when given a Gold Ingot.
  2. To get your own Happy Ghast, you'll have to rehydrate the Dried Ghast block. You'll see the Dried Ghast block slowly gain more color, and the expression on the block will turn from a frown to a smile. You'll also see green particles around the Dried Ghast as it rehydrates.
    • It takes about 20 minutes for the Dried Ghast to rehydrate. Once the Dried Ghast rehydrates, it will turn into a Ghastling (or baby Ghast).

  3. Feed the Ghastling Snowballs to speed up the process. Snowballs can be obtained by using a Shovel without Silk Touch on a Snow block or snow layers.[2]
    • In Bedrock Edition, you'll need 10 Snowballs to speed up the Ghastling growth timer.
    • In Java Edition, one Snowball will reduce the amount of time for the Ghastling to grow up by 10%.[3]
  4. While your Happy Ghast is tamed as soon as it grows up, you can't ride it until you put a harness on it. Harnesses can be crafted with 3 Leather, 2 Glass, and 1 Wool. The color Wool you use will change the color of the Harness that is crafted.[4]
    • You can change the Harness's color after it's crafted by combining it with any Dye.
