PDF download Download Article

There aren’t many things more fearsome than the Yautja, more commonly known as Predators from the hit movie series. Predators have been relentless hunters throughout the franchise, and they’ve used a deadly arsenal of weapons to take down their prey. Whether they fight with close-range melee weapons or at long range, they’ve got the right tool for the job. Keep reading, and we’ll cover all the weapons used throughout the Predator movies as well as some that only appear in comics and video games.

The Main Weapons of a Yautja Predator

The Yautja from the Predator series use a variety of weapons throughout the movies depending on what they're hunting. Predators prefer to carry weapons for close combat, such as wrist blades or plasma swords. They'll also use long range weapons, like their shoulder-mounted Plasmacaster or Smart Disc, for tougher prey.

Wrist blades Wrist blades are one of the Yautja’s most notable hand-to-hand combat weapons. These sharp blades pop out of the Predator’s wrist gauntlet so they can cut, slice, and attack anyone within their reach. Some Yautja have a large single wrist blade while others have a pair of blades for maximum efficiency.[1]
    • Notable appearances: Predator, Alien vs. Predator, Prey, Predator: Badlands
    • Some wrist blades can flex or have the blades facing the opposite direction.
  2. 2
Combistick The combistick is a type of spear that starts off compact, but it can telescope out to a full-sized weapon. Predators can use their combistick as a staff or close-range spear, and they may also throw it to attack their prey from a distance. Some Yautja have custom combisticks that can be split apart or folded, and some improvise their own by adding a Xenomorph tail to use against aliens.[2]
    • Notable appearances: Predator 2, Alien vs. Predator, Prey, Predator: Killer of Killers

  3. 3
Arm blade Also known as a “scimitar,” the arm blade is a longer version of the wrist blade that connects further up on a Predator’s arm. These long blades can extend and retract on command, so they’re hidden away when Yautja don’t need them in battle.[3]
    • Notable appearances: Alien vs. Predator, Predators
  4. 4
Razor whip The razor whip is an improvised Yautja weapon made out of a Xenomorph’s tail. When the Yautja use their whip, it wraps around their prey and slices through them when it’s pulled tight. The whip is also resistant to Xenomorph acid, so it’s one of the preferred weapons when fighting against other aliens.[4]
    • Notable appearances: Alien vs. Predator: Requiem, Predator: Killer of Killers, Predator: Badlands
  5. 5
Sword Also known as “H’sai’de” in their native language, some Yautja carry metal swords that resemble the ones used by humans. While standard swords aren’t as common, Yautja use them for close combat to cut and slash their way through their opponents and prey.[5]
    • Notable appearances: Predator 2
  6. 6
Plasma sword Yautja plasma swords resemble normal metal swords, but they have plasma energy running along the blades. The extra energy makes it easier for the sword to slice through their prey, and they’re primarily used by the most skilled Predators.
    • Notable appearances: Predator: Badlands
  7. 7
Ceremonial dagger The ceremonial dagger is specially treated to be resistant to Xenomorph blood, and it’s often used to take trophies from an opponent they just beat. While the dagger isn’t normally used in fights, Yautja may use it as a last resort if they’re in immediate danger.[6]
    • Notable appearances: Alien vs. Predator: Requiem
  8. 8
Power punch glove The Power Punch Glove pops out of a Yautja’s wrist gauntlet and covers a Predator’s fist with strong pieces of metal like brass knuckles. While Yautja are already extremely strong, the Power Punch Glove increases their strength enough to punch a hole through solid material like concrete.[7]
    • Notable appearances: Alien vs. Predator: Requiem, Predator: Killer of Killers
  9. 9
Battle Axe Battle axes are typically used by larger and stronger Yautja because they’re more difficult to maneuver in a fight. These axes have a long handle and a large, sharp blade that’s perfect for chopping or slicing through anyone who gets in a Predator’s way.
    • Notable appearances: Predator 2, Predators
  10. 10
Noose The noose is an extremely simple weapon made out of thin wire that’s nearly impossible to see in the dark. Yautja will either set the noose as a trap or wrap it around their victim’s neck to silently kill them.

  1. 1
Plasmacaster Also known as the “shoulder cannon,” the Plasmacaster is one of the main weapons attached to Yautja armor. Each Yautja has a unique Plasmacaster, but they all function similarly. This small cannon pops up from a Predator’s armor and fires powerful bolts of plasma at whoever they’re targeting.[8]
    • Notable appearances: Predator, Predator 2, Predator vs. Alien, Predators, The Predator
    • In Predator: Badlands, Dek has a small animal that spits acid wrapped around his shoulder to use as a makeshift Plasmacaster.
  2. 2
Smart disc The Smart Disc is one of the most fearsome Predator weapons because of its versatility. Yautja throw this sharp disc at their enemies to slice right through them, and then it comes back like a boomerang. Predators can also use it as a close range weapon to fight and defend themselves.
    • Notable appearances: Predator 2, Alien vs. Predator
  3. 3
Net gun The look of Yautja net guns has changed throughout the Predator movies, but they all function the same. When a Predator wants to capture their prey, the net gun shoots a thick wire mesh at the target, and it constricts around them.[9]
    • Notable appearances: Predator 2, Alien vs. Predator, Prey
  4. 4
Plasma bow While some Yautja use a bow that resembles one on Earth, the plasma bow is a much deadlier weapon. Instead of firing arrows, the bow creates bolts of plasma when Yautja pull back the drawstring. When they let go, the plasma shoots in whichever direction they’re aiming.
    • Notable appearances: Predator: Badlands
  5. 5
Bolt gun The bolt gun was used by the Feral Predator. After the Predator fires, the bolt gun shoots out short metal bolts that can seek up to 3 targets and take them out with deadly precision.
    • Notable appearances: Prey
  6. 6
Shuriken Similar to the Smart Disc, the shuriken is a round disc-shaped weapon fitted with long curved blades. Predators throw the shuriken to slice through anyone in their way, and it comes right back afterwards. Shurikens also work well in hand-to-hand combat.
    • Notable appearances: Alien vs. Predator
    • In Predator: Killer of Killers, a version of the shuriken appears with laser whips that wrap around a plane to take it down.
  7. 7
Energy flechette The energy flechette is a smaller version of the Plasmacaster attached to the Yautja’s wrist gauntlet. When a Predator raises their arm, they can fire a bolt of plasma in whichever direction they’re pointing.
    • Notable appearances: Predator 2
  8. 8
Plasma pistol The plasma pistol is a handheld version of the Plasmacaster, and it fires a powerful burst of energy. Some Yautja-modified plasma pistols are powerful enough to completely destroy anything that gets in their line of fire.
    • Notable appearances: Alien vs. Predator: Requiem
  9. 9
Wrist rockets Some Predators carry small cannons or rockets inside their wrist gauntlets. All they have to do is raise their arms to aim, and they can immediately fire explosive rockets toward their prey.
    • Notable appearances: The Predator
  10. 10
Predator mines Predator mines are one the Yautja’s most versatile explosives because they can be programmed for multiple functions. They’ve been used as remote proximity mines that trigger when someone gets too close as well as laser mines that shoot deadly beams of light.
    • Notable appearances: Alien vs. Predator: Requiem, Prey
    • In Predator: Badlands, Dek improvises his own Predator mines by combining spiked plant pods and explosive grubs.
  11. 11
Freeze grenade Also known as “cryo grenades,” these explosives send a chill through whoever is in their blast zone. When the grenades go off, they’re known to freeze and take down some of the largest opponents, including the Kalisk on Genna.[10]
    • Notable appearances: Predator: Badlands

Yautja Technology & Equipment

  1. 1
Bio-helmet The bio-helmet is one of the Yautja’s most notable pieces of equipment because it protects their face and helps them track their prey. Most bio-helmets allow the Yautja to switch to thermal or night vision so they have the edge on their prey, but they can also use it to detect Xenomorphs in the Alien vs. Predator series.
    • Bio-helmets let the Yautja record and play audio to disorient their prey.
    • Bio-helmets also feature 3 dots in a triangular pattern that the Yautja use to help them aim weapons toward their prey.
  2. 2
Body armor Most Yautjas wear pieces of body armor to protect their chest, arms, and legs, but the type of armor they wear depends on what they’re hunting. If they’re taking down an easier opponent, they may wear light armor or no armor at all. Against a formidable foe, they’ll opt for heavier armor to defend themselves.[11]
    • The type of body armor and how it’s adorned depends on the Predator wearing it. Some armor is more basic, while more advanced and higher-ranking Yautja have more powerful armor.
    • In Predator: Badlands, Dek uses pieces of nature to build his own custom armor when he doesn’t have any of his own.
  3. 3
Wrist gauntlet Yautja typically wear a wrist gauntlet on their left arm and use it to control multiple tools they carry. The gauntlet has a computer system that they use to control their Plasmacasters, cloaking devices, helmet vision modes, and communicators with other Yautja Predators.
    • Some elite Yautja warriors seen in Aliens vs. Predator wear wrist gauntlets on both arms for even more powerful attacks.
  4. 4
Cloaking device The cloaking device is one of the Yautja’s most notable pieces of equipment because it allows them to hide in plain sight. When a Predator activates their cloaking device, they become invisible to perfectly blend in with their surroundings.[12]
    • As seen in Predator: Badlands, Yautja earn their cloaking device after they have a successful first hunt.
    • Predators may have a slightly visible silhouette where the cloaking distorts their body.
  5. 5
Self-destruct device All Yautja are equipped with an explosive charge, typically connected to their wrist gauntlet. If a Predator is bested in battle and knows that it won’t survive, they’ll activate their self-destruct device to have an honorable death. Self-destruct devices have appeared in every Predator movie because Yautja rarely go on hunts without them.[13]
    • Yautja may also activate their self-destruct devices if they’re worried about their technology getting into the wrong hands.
  6. 6
Medicomp The medicomp is basically a Yautja first aid kit Predators carry to help take care of injuries while out on a hunt. Medicomps typically carry surgical tools and medicines to cauterize wounds and patch up damage so they can continue searching for their prey.[14]

Spear gun Spear guns are smaller handheld weapons loaded with sharp metal spears. Predators can shoot all the spears at once or separately to target multiple enemies. Some spear guns were even powerful enough to break through stones.
    • Notable appearances: Aliens versus Predator (video game), Aliens versus Predator: Extinction (video game)
  2. 2
Electroshock bola Bolas are weighted ropes that Predators throw to wrap around and trap their prey. However, Yautja bolas carry an electric current, so they shock and take out whatever is unlucky enough to get trapped by them.
    • Notable appearances: Predator: Big Game (comic)
  3. 3
Burner The Yuatja burners are similar to Plasmacasters, but they’re handheld weapons used by young warriors. Burners fire a rapid stream of plasma to deal a lot of damage to anyone who gets in their way.[15]
    • Notable appearances: Aliens vs. Predator: Prey (comic), Aliens vs. Predator: War (comic), Aliens vs. Predator: Hunter’s Planet (comic)
  4. 4
Heavy plasma cannon While most Yautja stick to lighter weapons to give their prey a fair fight, more elite warriors have used heavy plasma cannons that are more destructive. When a Predator fires this weapon, a large bolt of plasma shoots out and is powerful enough to destroy ships.[16]
    • Notable appearances: Alien vs. Predator: Duel (comic)
  5. 5
Plasma grenade Plasma grenades create a large explosion of plasma energy when they detonate, and they’re strong enough to take down armored vehicles. While they aren’t used often by Predators, they’re useful when a threat is too large to be taken down by any other means.[17]
    • Notable appearances: Predator vs Alien: Sand Trap (comic)

How does a Yautja choose their weapon?

PDF download Download Article
  1. Yautja Predators choose weapons that give their prey a fighting chance. The film Predator: Killer of Killers reveals that the Yautja have a strict honor code that they follow while on a hunt. They want their prey to have equal odds of winning or losing, so they’ll often choose melee weapons that make the fight fair and more competitive.
    • Taking down powerful prey with fewer weapons and equipment is more honorable to Yautja warriors.
    • In Predator: Badlands, Yautja earn their cloaking device after a successful hunt against an admirable foe.
    • Using powerful weapons that cause mass casualties is normally forbidden during Yautja hunts unless there is a huge threat, such as Xenomorph hives in Alien vs. Predator.
