  1. In season 6, episode 9 of Better Call Saul, "Fun and Games," Gus enters a wine bar where the sommelier, David, knows him as a regular. As they chat about wine, it's clear from the expression of rapt attention on Gus's face that he has feelings for David. But when David leaves the bar to fetch a special bottle of wine, Gus's smile drops, and his eyes turn cold. David never appears in the show again, implying that Gus never pursued a relationship with him.
  2. Gould was a key writer for all 5 seasons of Breaking Bad. He was also the co-showrunner of Better Call Saul alongside Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan. In an episode of The Ringer podcast, Gould explained that in the wine bar scene in Better Call Saul, Gus's mood shifts because he's holding onto his rage against the cartel. Gus's former business partner, Max—whom Gould also refers to as his boyfriend—was murdered by cartel leader Don Eladio Vuente. This event serves as the catalyst for Gus's revenge arc in Breaking Bad.[1]

Were Gus & Max lovers?

  1. Gould calls Max "his [Gus's] boyfriend" in The Ringer interview, thus officially confirming that they were more than just the hermanos (the Spanish word for "brothers") in Los Hermanos, the name of Gus's restaurant. Gay relationships weren't widely accepted in the cartel or in society at the time the show is set. That's probably why they kept it a secret, and why Gus's feelings for Max were only implied and never spoken.
    • Max is murdered by Don Eladio in a flashback scene in Breaking Bad season 4, episode 8, "Hermanos."
    • Other hints that Gus and Max were in a relationship are the homophobic remarks from the Salamancas. In one scene in Better Call Saul, Hector Salamanca calls them "the Butt Brothers." In another, Lalo Salamanca refers to Max as Gus's boyfriend.
  2. In Breaking Bad season 3, episode 11, "Abiquiu," Gus invites Walter White over to his house for dinner, which Gus cooks himself. During the evening, Gus mentions having to cook without certain ingredients because his "children" won't eat them. There are also toys in the background of his home. However, when Jesse Pinkman goes to Gus's house in season 4, the toys are gone. Gus also never refers to his "children" again, nor does he imply he has a wife.
    • Why did Gus lie about having a family? Fans theorize that the toys were just props, carefully positioned so that Walt would see them and believe Gus was a family man, like him. In other words, it was part of Gus's attempts to gain Walt's trust, so he could manipulate him into doing what he wanted.
    • Did you know? In a Time interview in 2011, the actor who plays Gus, Giancarlo Esposito, explains that he originally imagined Gus as a heterosexual man with a secret family. But he also mentions loving the inference that Max was Gus's lover.[2]
