We also go over how to place and craft your paintings so you can get started on your Minecraft art gallery. Read on to learn how.

There are currently 47 paintings in Minecraft. They can be obtained by placing a blank painting on a wall. You'll get a random painting when you do this, so to collect all the paintings, you'll need to place at least 47 blank paintings. There are also four unreleased paintings you can get via commands or data packs.

Placing Paintings

PDF download Download Article
  1. 1
    The painting chosen when you place the canvas is random. There are 9 sizes of paintings: 1x1 block, 1x2 blocks, 2x1 blocks, 2x2 blocks, 3x3 blocks, 3x4 blocks, 4x2 blocks, 4x3 blocks, and 4x4 blocks. When you place a blank painting, the game will choose a random painting from the largest size that fits the space you placed it in.[5]
    • For example, if you placed a blank canvas on a wall that's larger than 4x4 blocks that has nothing else on it, you'll get one of the five 4x4 block paintings at random.
      • The one exception is preset paintings, available only in Creative Mode in Java Edition. In the "Functional Blocks" tab of your Creative inventory, you'll find preset paintings. The size of the painting, as well as its name and artist, will be displayed in its tooltip.
    • If you place a painting and don't get the one you want, you can pick it up and place it again.
    • To force the game to give you paintings of a different size, use blocks to constrain how big the surface is that you're placing the painting on.
  2. 2
    Paintings can be placed on most blocks. As long as a block has the "legacy solid" property (with some exceptions), you'll be able to place a painting on that block. Most fully or partially solid blocks will work, as will some non-solid blocks like signs, banners, pressure plates, bamboo shoots, and sculk veins. You can also place paintings on redstone repeaters and comparators, even though they don't have the "legacy solid" property.
  3. 3
    Paintings can be crafted with 8 sticks and one wool. The color of the wool doesn't affect the color of the painting. To craft a painting, place the wool in the center of the crafting grid and place each stick in the boxes surrounding the wool.[6]
    • Paintings can also be obtained by trading with master-level Shepherd villagers. Two emeralds will get you three paintings.
    • You can also get paintings by removing them from walls. Simply attack it, break one of its supporting blocks, or throw a projectile at it to break it. Once broken, the painting will drop itself.

Unused Paintings

  1. There are four unused paintings that can't be accessed normally. These paintings were supposedly originally used in a promotional map for Minecraft Pocket Edition, and were never fully added to the game. You can add them to the game using commands, data packs, or in the "Operator Utilities" tab in the Creative inventory.[7]
    • All of these paintings take up 2x2 blocks, and each features an element. Earth is brown, Wind is white, Fire is orange, and Water is blue. Use the codes below to spawn these paintings in your game:
      • Earth: /summon minecraft:painting ~ ~ ~ {variant:"earth"}
      • Wind: /summon minecraft:painting ~ ~ ~ {variant:"wind"}
      • Fire: /summon minecraft:painting ~ ~ ~ {variant:"fire"}
      • Water: /summon minecraft:painting ~ ~ ~ {variant:"water"}
