In this article, we’ll break down what it means, why "going AFK" is a problem, and other common terms you’re likely to come across when gaming in Roblox.

What AFK Means in Roblox

AFK is short for "away from keyboard" or "absent from keyboard." It’s shorthand to describe a player who was previously responding and playing with you, but abruptly stops interacting for a long period of time.

   AFK stands for "away from keyboard." It means someone has walked away from their computer, or they're literally away from their keyboard. Some people say AFK stands for "absent from keyboard," but the meaning is identical regardless. AFK means that you have left the computer! If you’re playing Roblox and you get up to go do something else without exiting the game, you are considered AFK.

   • You are not AFK if you’re not online at all. You can only "go AFK" if you hop online, start playing, and then abandon the computer without leaving the game.
   • "AFK" isn’t a term exclusive to Roblox. Every online multiplayer gamer will recognize "AFK" and what it means.

   You may be abandoning your teammates. It’s no big deal if you get up for a moment to use the bathroom or clean up a glass of water you spilled or something, but if you’re playing online with friends and you go AFK for an extended period of time (like more than 2-3 minutes), you may be leaving your teammates out to dry.

   • Going AFK is a bigger deal in some Roblox games than others. Going absent when it’s time to vote on who to kick out during Murder Mystery 2 is a much bigger problem than going AFK while hanging out in Bloxburg.

   You may be banned or kicked off a server for going AFK. Every Roblox game has its own rules dealing with AFK players, and if you’re unlucky (or you go AFK often), you may get banned from playing a particular game. The Roblox servers also automatically boot players off the platform if they’re AFK for more than 20 minutes, so you’ll lose your server spot at the bare minimum.

   GG "Good game." A common phrase to throw in chat at the end of games to let other players know it was a good match. It’s sort of like saying, "It was fun playing with you all."

   • "Super fun match. GG! Good luck on the next one!"

   BTC "Because they can." While it can stand for "Bitcoin," the most common meaning of BTC in Roblox is "because they can." It’s typically used to explain why a player is behaving weirdly.

   • "Don’t ask why xXPeaches145 is doing jumping jacks on the car. The answer is always BTC."

   ABC ABC doesn’t stand for anything, but it’s an important phrase in Roblox. It basically means that you’re willing to roleplay a specific character or sign up for a specific task. It’s sort of like asking, "Do you need a [role]?"

   Obby "Obstacle." Obby is used to describe challenges in games or games that are designed around completing obstacle courses.
