Understand how to insert and use the rupee currency symbol

The Rupee is the official currency for India. To type the symbol for the Rupee (₹) on Windows, you'll need to add the English-Indian keyboard in the control panel. On a Mac, you can simply open the emoji & symbol viewer to insert the Rupee symbol. Here's how to type the symbol for the Indian Rupee on a Windows or Mac computer.

Adding the Rupee Symbol on a Computer

To type a rupee symbol on a PC, you'll need to add the English (India) keyboard in your Language & region settings. Click Add a language, select English (India), and then install it. Select the new keyboard and press Ctrl + Alt + 4. On Mac, click Edit > Emoji & Symbols > Currency Symbols > ₹.

    Open Settings. Click the Start menu and select the cog icon. This can be found next to the power button or in your pinned apps.

    Select English (India) and click Next. You can type "english india" to quickly find this option, or you can scroll down the list to find it manually.

    • Make sure the box is checked for Language pack.
    • This may take a few moments to install. Once downloaded, you'll see your current language in the bottom-right corner, in the taskbar.[1]

  1. This will display the control panel app in the Start menu.
  2. Click the Control Panel app icon that resembles a blue panel with graphs and charts on it.
  3. It's below the "Clock, Language, and Region" heading in the Control Panel options.
  4. You will most likely find English (United States) as your current keyboard language. Clicking "Options" will open a new pop-up window.
  5. It's in the middle of the page, below your current keyboard language in the "Input Method" section.
  6. You can type india in the search bar at the top to narrow down the selections.

  1. This can be Word, Messages, TextEdit, or any other app that allows you to type text.
  2. It's in the menu bar at the top of the screen.
  3. It's at the bottom of the "Edit" menu. This opens the Emoji and Character Viewer on your Mac computer.
    • You can also press Control+⌘ Command+Space to bring up the emoji and character viewer.
  4. It's in the column to the left.
    • If you don't see a column on the left, click the button with the command symbol (⌘) in the top-right corner of the window to open the Character Viewer in full windowed mode.
    • If you don’t see Currency Symbols in the left menu, click the ••• dropdown icon at the top left corner of the window and select Customize List. Check the box next to Currency Symbols and click Done.
  5. The Indian rupee is in the third line of currency symbols. This inserts the Rupee symbol in the text where your cursor is currently located. There are additional character variations in the lower-left corner of the Character Viewer.
