  1. Thankfully, it isn’t hard to watch the Saga of Tanya the Evil in its entirety, considering it currently consists of a 12-episode season (plus a recap episode in the middle), a movie, and an ONA (original net animation) short. All Saga of Tanya the Evil content has been released in chronological order—so all you have to do is follow the release dates! Here’s how to watch the series in order:[1]
    • Saga of Tanya the Evil, Season 1, Episodes 1 - 6 (2017)
    • Saga of Tanya the Evil, Season 1, Episode 6.5, “War Report” (recap, 2017)
    • Saga of Tanya the Evil, Season 1, Episodes 7 - 12 (2017)
    • Saga of Tanya the Evil – the Movie (2019)
    • Saga of Tanya the Evil: Operation Desert Pasta (ONA, 2021)

What is Saga of Tanya the Evil about?

PDF download Download Article
  1. Tanya’s story begins in her former life as an atheistic Japanese salaryman in his final moments. That man is reincarnated into an alternate version of Earth in the early 1920s as Tanya Degurechaff, who is recruited into the Mage Corps of “the Empire” (a power resembling Germany). Tanya’s atheism in her former life led her into a conflict with a powerful deity, and her reincarnation is a form of punishment.[2]
    • Isekai is Japanese for “another world.” It’s a popular anime, manga, and light novel genre in which the protagonist is typically transported to (or, in this case, reborn into) an alternate universe.

All Saga of Tanya the Evil Content, Explained

  1. As mentioned above, the Saga of Tanya the Evil’s first season follows Tanya Degurechaff as she attempts to climb the ranks of the Empire’s armed forces during a time of war, desperate to avoid the frontlines. At the same time, Tanya’s ongoing feud with the being that reincarnated her (which she calls “Being X”) repeatedly lands her in mortal peril. Here’s a list of the season’s episodes:[3]
    • 1 - “The Devil of the Rhine” (“Rain no Akuma”); January 6, 2017
    • 2 - “Prologue” (“Purorōgu”); January 13, 2017
    • 3 - “Deus Vult” (“Kami ga Sore o Nozomareru”); January 20, 2017
    • 4 - “Campus Life” (“Kyanpasu Raifu”); January 27, 2017
    • 5 - “My First Battalion” (“Hajimari no daitai”); February 3, 2017
    • 6 - “Beginning of Madness” (“Kyōki no makuake”); February 10, 2017
    • 6.5 - “War Report” (“Senkyō hōkoku”); February 17, 2017
    • 7 - “The Battle of the Fjord” (“Fiyorudo no kōbō”); February 24, 2017
    • 8 - “Trial by Fire” (“Hi no Shiren”); March 3, 2017
    • 9 - “Preparations for Advance” (“Zenshin Junbi”); March 10, 2017
    • 10 - “Path to Victory” (“Shōri e no michi”); March 17, 2017
    • 11 - “Resistance” (“Teikōsha”); March 24, 2017
    • 12 - “How to Use a Victory” (“Shōri no tsukaikata”); March 31, 2017
  2.  Saga of Tanya the Evil’s first season is technically 13 episodes long—but that’s only because there’s an episode 6.5 called “War Report,” which recaps the events of the first 6 episodes. “War Report” is totally optional as far as watching the series in order; you can watch it for continuity (or if you’d like a refresher), or you can skip it if you just want to move on to the next part of the story.
    • Running time: Standard episode length, around 23 minutes
  3. The Saga of Tanya the Evil movie follows Tanya and the 203rd Aerial Mage Battalion. In Africa, they manage to destroy the Free Republic’s headquarters and believe they’ll get to go back to the Empire for R&R, only to be sent on an immediate reconnaissance mission. At the same time, Mary Sioux—daughter of Tanya’s old enemy, Anton Sioux—pursues Tanya (empowered by Being X) to get revenge for her father’s death.[4]
    • Running time: 115 minutes
    • Release date: February 8, 2019
  4.  Operation Desert Pasta is a short, comedic special taking place in the southern desert, where Tanya and her squad are on the frontline against the Free Republic. They’re shipped dried pasta, but struggle to cook it, forcing them to raid enemy camps for ingredients under “Operation Desert Pasta” (and, in the end, manage to cook a delicious meal).
    • Running time: 16 minutes
    • Release date: June 19, 2021
    • Operation Desert Pasta is basically filler content—it’s fun, but doesn’t further the overarching story much.
  5.  Saga of Tanya’s second season hasn’t arrived yet, but it was confirmed in 2021 and has a projected release date sometime in 2026. So, fans of the series will definitely be seeing more, even if an exact date hasn’t been provided yet! This next season comes nearly 10 years after the initial release of  Saga of Tanya the Evil season 1, with the main cast all confirmed to be returning.[5]
    • The next season of Saga of Tanya the Evil is getting a new director, Takayuki Yukimoto.
    • The anime’s second season got a teaser trailer in late 2025, confirming a release date in 2026.

Is the Saga of Tanya movie a sequel?

PDF download Download Article
  1. Yes, the movie is a sequel based on the light novel series. It directly continues the events of the anime series, with the main cast of the series all reprising their roles. So, if you’re trying to watch the entire series, you won’t want to miss the movie. It adapts parts of the light novel series, specifically parts of Volume 3 and all of Volume 4. Presumably, the next season will continue by adapting the next few light novel volumes.
    • The Saga of Tanya movie is also a canon part of the series. Some anime movies aren’t canon (rather, they’re considered fillers or side-content), but this one is definitely part of the anime’s main plot!
