Which country has a blue, yellow, and red flag?

Global flag expert Haitham Kuraishi says that several countries have yellow-blue-red flags, including Armenia, Colombia, Ecuador, Chad, Romania, Venezuela, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Other countries with blue, yellow, and red flags include Andorra, Liechtenstein, Moldova, and Mongolia.

The flag of Andorra, a small country between France and Spain, is a vertical tricolor of blue, yellow, and red. The leftmost stripe is blue, the rightmost one is red, and the middle one is yellow. On the yellow stripe, there’s a depiction of Andorra’s national coat of arms. This coat of arms features a shield with four quadrants, and the phrase Virtus Unita Fortior, or “United virtue is stronger.” The designs inside the quadrants, from top left and moving clockwise, depict the arms of the Bishop of Urgell, the arms of the Count of Foix, the arms of Catalonia, and the arms of the Viscounts of Béarn.^{[1]

The Armenian flag has three equal, horizontal bands. The top band is red, the middle band is blue, and the bottom band appears yellow, although it’s officially orange. The red is said to represent the country’s struggle for independence. Meanwhile, the blue may represent Armenia’s unchanging landscape, while the yellow (or orange) represents hard work and bravery.^{[2]

Colombia 🇨🇴

The Colombian flag is made up of three horizontal stripes. The bottom stripe is red and the middle stripe is blue. The top stripe is yellow, and is also twice the height of the other two stripes, taking up half of the flag’s total height. Colombia’s flag design is similar to that of Ecuador and Venezuela, given that the three countries were once united as the former state of Gran Colombia. The colors of yellow, blue, and red, respectively, officially symbolize the sun and the country’s riches, the Colombian skies and seas, and the blood spilled for Colombia’s independence.^{[4]

Democratic Republic of the Congo 🇨🇩

The Democratic Republic of the Congo flies a flag with a light blue field. From the top-right to bottom-left corners of the flag, there’s a red diagonal stripe with a thin yellow border around it. In the top-left corner of the flag, there’s a yellow star. When originally added to the flag in 1877, this yellow star was meant to represent a shining light in the “Dark Continent.” However, it is now believed to symbolize the unity of the Congolese provinces.^{[5]

Ecuador’s flag has three horizontal stripes: the top stripe is yellow, the middle one is blue, and the bottom one is red. The yellow stripe is twice the height of the other two, so it occupies half the height of the flag. In the center of the flag, there’s a national coat of arms depicting an oval shield with a mountain (Chimborazo) and river landscape. There’s also a steamboat on the river, and a sun with Zodiac symbols above it. Around the shield, there are consular beams, banners with the country’s national flag design, palm and laurel branches, and a condor.^{[6]

Liechtenstein’s flag is split horizontally into two bands. The top band is dark blue, and the bottom one is red. In the top left corner, there’s a golden crown. The blue and red colors are said to symbolize the sky and the embers in the hearth of every home, respectively. The golden crown, meanwhile, represents the principality’s monarchy and the importance of unity and sovereignty.^{[7]

Moldova’s national flag has three vertical stripes in blue, yellow, and red (from left to right). The same design is used by the Romanian flag, as the two bordering countries have a close relationship. However, the Moldovan flag also has a coat of arms in the center. The national coat of arms depicts an eagle holding a scepter, an olive branch, and a cross. On the eagle’s chest, there’s a shield with an auroch’s head surrounded by a crescent moon, a star, and a flower.^{[8]

The Mongolian flag has three equal vertical stripes. The outer stripes are both red, while the center stripe is blue. Within the leftmost red stripe, there’s a Soyombo symbol depicted in yellow. The Soyombo symbol is an emblem with deep historical, spiritual, and cultural ties to the Mongolian nation. It’s actually made up of several smaller symbols, including fire, the sun, the moon, triangles (to represent spears), rectangles (to represent fortress walls), fish, and yin-yang.^{[9]

The Romanian flag is a vertical tricolor with three equal stripes. The leftmost stripe is blue, the middle one is yellow, and the rightmost one is red, just like Chad. This design was influenced by the local flags of Moldavia and Wallachia, the two principalities that united to form the country of Romania. While no official interpretations of the flag colors exist, some claim that the blue represents the sky, the yellow represents the fertile land, and the red represents the bravery of those who’ve fought for Romania’s freedom.^{[10]

The Venezuelan flag has three equal horizontal stripes in yellow (top), blue (center), and red (bottom). In the center of the flag, there’s a semi-circle of eight white stars, representing the original seven provinces that united against Spain, as well as an eighth star to honor Simón Bolívar and represent the historical province of Guayana. The top-left corner of the flag features the national coat of arms, which includes a sheaf of wheat, a white horse, two cornucopias, a set of tools and weapons, and branches of laurel and palm. Underneath the coat of arms, there are ribbons with the dates of the country’s revolution and Federal War, as well as the words “Independencia” (Independence), “Federación” (Federation), and “República Bolivariana de Venezuela” (Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela).^{[11]
