How can I write the @ symbol on a PC?

Look for the key marked @ and hold Shift as you press it. This should be the 2 key on the number row of a standard QWERTY keyboard. If that fails, hold the alt key and press the 6 key on the number pad followed by the 4 key on the number pad, then release the alt key.

When I type :), Word turns it into a smiley face. How do I get rid of the smiley face so only the :) remains?

Often it will auto correct. To avoid this, you will have to go into the autocorrect settings in the general settings of Microsoft Word, and turn autocorrect off. Alternatively: The smiley face is created after you press the space bar. So enter in :), press space, and then remove the space and then put the space back. That should do it.
