Take online surveys.

  1. Some research companies will pay for your feedback. They'll give you surveys that ask about your experience as a consumer and the common products that you use. You can make up to $50 for only a few hours of your time on average.[1]
    • Try Pinecone Research, My Survey, iPoll, or Toluna to start.
    • Sign up for multiple survey sites to maximize your survey opportunities. Some sites will only send out 1-2 surveys a month.
    • Watch out for scam surveys. If a site ever asks you to put in your credit card information or purchase a prepaid Visa, don’t proceed.

Hello, wikiHow. I’m currently trying to move out of my parents’ home but I’m just not making enough money at my normal day job to do that in any realistic time. I’d love to speed the process up by picking up a side hustle, but here’s the problem. My day job is at a restaurant and it’s usually pretty busy. I’m so exhausted by the time that I get home that the idea of going out to do a second job just sounds impossible. I just wouldn’t be able to do it. I was thinking I’d pursue something online, but I don’t really know what the most realistic or viable? What can I do to make money from home? I’m pretty good on a computer, but I just can’t tell what’s legit or not when I search for jobs.

I was in your shoes a few years ago. I’ll tell you what I did. So, I started out doing transcription work online. I would be given an audio file and need to type out what I heard. It was very easy work, but I’m a little bit of a slow typer and it was really boring to me so I looked for something else. Still, if you’re a fast typist and you don’t mind listening to potentially dull audio files it’s very easy work.

Then, I tried driving for Uber and Lyft. I figured sitting behind the wheel of a car wouldn’t be that exhausting. I was mostly right, but I really wanted to find something I could do from bed, honestly. But yeah, if you have a car, rideshare is a pretty easy way to make dough.

I ended up eventually tutoring online. I worked with an agency who set me up with 3-4 students who needed help with math. I didn’t even have a math degree, I studied chemistry. But if you are good with working with younger people, that’s the route I’d go. It’s not crazy complicated and the money is pretty good!

You're in a tough spot, and it’s completely understandable to feel stuck and exhausted. The good news is that with your computer skills and desire to work from home, there are realistic options that don't require a second physical job. Here are a few ideas to consider:

Freelancing – Platforms like Upwork, Fiverr, and Freelancer have legit gigs in writing, data entry, graphic design, and virtual assistance. Start small, build a profile, and grow with time.

Online Tutoring – If you're good at a subject, sites like Preply or Cambly pay for tutoring or casual conversation practice.

Microtasks – Websites like Clickworker, Amazon MTurk, or Appen pay for small online tasks that you can do at your own pace.

Selling Digital Services – If you can learn basic skills like Canva design, resume writing, or social media posting, you can offer those as services online.

Online Courses or YouTube Learning – Pick a skill with demand (like email marketing, WordPress, or virtual assistance), and commit just 30 minutes a day to learn. It will pay off soon.

The key is consistency, even if it’s slow. One hour a day builds momentum. And yes, there are scams out there—stick to platforms with strong reputations and always research before sharing personal info or paying fees.

Try signing up with an overseas tutoring company based in countries like China or India. They often pay anywhere from $18 to $25 an hour for English tutors. It's pretty easy, since they give you the lesson plan. Best of all, the requirements are pretty low—if you're fluent in English, you should get in.

Be very cautious about sending in your personal information. If you think the website is legit, try looking up reviews to double check that other people have used it before. If you can't find anything or people say it's a scam, don't give them your info.

To make quick money online, try signing up for online survey sites, but avoid signing up for sites that ask for your credit card information, or require you to make purchases. Alternatively, sign up for Amazon’s Mechanical Turk where you can get paid for completing simple tasks, like looking at a picture and describing it. You can also try providing services online such as writing, accounting, and tutoring through freelance sites like Elance or Fiverr.
