It might take a while, but having your dwellers in Fallout Shelter make a baby is well worth the time and effort! Making babies allows you to increase your Vault’s population—not to mention get more dwellers with desirable traits (since children inherit their parents’ abilities). In this handy guide, we’ll show you how to make babies in Fallout Shelter with minimal fuss, from fulfilling the requirements for pregnancy to raising the child from infancy to adulthood. Ready to get started? Then keep reading!

Fallout Shelter Pregnancy

It takes 3 hours for a pregnant dweller to give birth. To make a baby in Fallout Shelter, create a living quarter and assign a pair of dwellers to it. To increase the chances of pregnancy, ensure that at least one dweller has a Charisma of 7 or higher. Then, just let them flirt and wait for the magic to happen!

Making Dwellers Pregnant in Fallout Shelter

  1. Vaults automatically have a living room, which you can add to over time. If you haven’t yet, make sure your Vault has an empty living quarters room with space for two adult dwellers and a baby.[1]
    • Make sure your Vault also has survivable conditions overall—if there are problems, you’ll probably want to fix them before expanding the population by making babies!
  2. Now that you have a place for them to live, it’s time to assign a pair of dwellers to occupy that room. Dwellers use the Charisma SPECIAL stat while in living quarters, so it’s a good idea to choose dwellers with a high Charisma (at least a 7 or up). Pick two dwellers, and drag each of them to the living quarters room you want them to occupy.[2]
    • Any non-pregnant female dweller and male dweller in the living quarters are eligible to make babies together (so long as they aren’t related).
    • Initially, you may want only one male dweller to father the babies in your vault to make it easier to identify them later on.

  3. Once you’ve assigned dwellers to the living quarters, you’ll just have to wait for them to get to know each other. Once this happens, they’ll start flirting with each other and even dancing; finally, they’ll move out of sight for a while, and when they get back, the female dweller will almost always be pregnant.[3]
    • Check the banter dialogue above their heads to make sure they’re hitting it off. If they keep flirting with each other, they’re a good match—and it shouldn’t take too long for them to go off for some “alone time.”
    • If they don’t start flirting with each other, that probably means they aren’t compatible (in which case you’ll want to pick a new pairing).
    • When the dwellers head off to do some babymaking, you’ll hear an audio cue and see a series of floating smiley faces at the back of the living quarters to signal this.

Delivering Babies in Fallout Shelter

PDF download Download Article
  1. A pregnancy in Fallout Shelter lasts for 3 hours of real-world time (not in-game time). You don’t have to do anything else during this time to help the pregnancy (beyond running your Vault as usual). When the dweller is ready to give birth, you’ll see a green baby symbol over her head and hear baby sounds signifying the baby’s arrival.
    • The only reason your dweller won’t give birth after 3 hours is if there’s no room in the Vault—in which case she’ll wait until another dweller dies, the living quarters get an upgrade, or you simply add more of them.
  2. Once the dweller has delivered her baby, you can then proceed to name them. A baby will automatically take the father’s last name to make it easier for you to differentiate them from other dwellers; you just need to pick a first name.
    • Naming a baby is optional and will not have any effect on their future stats as an adult dweller.
    • You can also change the baby’s name (or any dweller’s name) anytime by double-clicking on their name from the Overseer’s Clipboard, or on their stat screen.
    • A dweller who gives birth can get pregnant again right away after the baby is born.
  3. You can check a child’s aging progress by clicking on them; there’ll be a progress bar at the top-right of their character page. It’s also a good idea to monitor your Vault’s resource production, since babies will take up extra resources as well.
    • Having too many babies in your shelter at once can drain your resources, so plan your Vault’s babymaking ahead of time!
  4. Once babies have grown up, you can treat them as you would any other dweller and assign them to jobs and living quarters that best fit their traits. And voila—you’ve successfully made a baby and “raised” them to adulthood!
    • As far as stats go, a baby will inherit their parents’ skills and levels. So, for instance, if you breed two dwellers with high Charisma scores, the baby will almost always have similar stats.
    • The same thing goes for levels—high-level parents are more likely to make a baby with a boosted level. Keep that in mind when you’re choosing dwellers to make a baby!

Restrictions for Pregnant Vault Dwellers in Fallout Shelter

  1. That means things like Wasteland exploration and combat are totally off the table; if raiders attack the Vault, your pregnant dweller will hide in her living quarters until the danger has passed. Similarly, if a Vault emergency arises, send other dwellers to the room with the problem—the pregnant dweller won’t be able to help (she’ll just run around, screaming).
    • Pregnant dwellers can still work and be assigned to rooms in the Vault. They don’t necessarily need to be accompanied by anyone else, either!
    • Just keep in mind that children can’t be assigned to different rooms or jobs until reaching adulthood.
  2. There are no speed boosts available; it’ll take 3 hours for the pregnancy to conclude—no more and no less. You also can’t get dwellers to reproduce any faster or slower, so take that into account before you get started with the process.
    • You won’t be able to see any clothing or weapons you equip to a pregnant dweller, either (although you’ll still get any stat bonuses provided by the clothes).
    • Similarly, children can’t be equipped with any clothing, weapons, or pets.

Babymaking Advice for Fallout Shelter

PDF download Download Article
  1. Because children inherit their parents’ stats, you’re most likely to get a child with higher stats (not to mention more specialized for certain jobs) if you choose the parents carefully and select dwellers with high stats. Figure out what kind of stats you want the child to have beforehand; that way, you can choose parents and plan the babymaking process accordingly.
    • For instance, if you need a new dweller with a high Agility stat, you should breed two dwellers with high Agility scores.
    • Try breeding high-level dwellers, too, since their baby will be a higher level.
  2. If one (or both) of your dwellers needs some extra Charisma to increase their compatibility, just equip clothing that gives them a Charisma boost. As we’ve already mentioned, dwellers with high Charisma are better at wooing other dwellers, so you’re more likely to make babies if you have dwellers with decent Charisma stats.[4]
    • However, keep in mind that babies won’t inherit stats that their parents have from clothing.
  3. It’s impossible to guarantee your dwellers’ stats, but you can steer them in the direction you want by assigning dwellers to training rooms. That way, you can ensure your dwellers are perfectly-suited for specific jobs—and, when you make babies, ensure children also have the preferred stats for specific jobs, too. Each training room boosts the following SPECIAL stat:
    • Weight room - Strength
    • Armory - Perception
    • Fitness room - Endurance
    • Lounge - Charisma
    • Classroom - Intelligence
    • Athletics room - Agility
    • Game room - Luck
  4. Since the game won’t allow you to equip them with weapons to defend themselves, pregnant dwellers will be at a disadvantage when your vault gets attacked. If possible, place your pregnant dwellers in living quarters at the far end of your vault, where raiders will have a harder time getting to them.
    • Although pregnant dwellers can still work, you might even consider assigning 1 to 2 other dwellers to work with them for protection.

How do you get legendary babies in Fallout Shelter?

PDF download Download Article
  1. Both parents must be level 50 and have maxed out SPECIALs if you want a legendary baby. However, it should be noted that, even with parents whose stats are absolutely maxed out across the board, there’s only a 6% chance of getting a legendary baby—so it’ll probably take several tries! There’s a slightly higher chance (13%) of getting a rare baby.
    • Legendary babies have 40 randomly assigned SPECIAL stats.
    • Rare babies have 28 randomly assigned SPECIAL stats.
