Coping with the Loss of a Cat

PDF download Download Article
  1. 1
Give yourself time and space to grieve. According to grief counselor Michaela Hudson, “Being patient with yourself and adjusting without them being there … is an adjustment to something that you used to love so much.”[6] You need to be gentle with yourself as you cope with the loss of your cherished feline. Allow yourself to feel your feelings (journaling can help) and think about your cat, as this can help you heal.
    • Dr. Dorsay notes that it’s important to affirm your feelings and recognize that grieving your pet is normal.[7]
    • As Dr. Dorsay explains, some people don’t treat pet loss seriously and can make those who are going through the loss of their pet feel embarrassed or shamed for their grief.[8] So, it’s important to remember that your feelings are valid and should be felt.
    • Dr. Dorsay adds that he used to run a pet loss program at the Humane Society, and one of the most common things he heard people say was, “I’ve never cried this hard in my entire life.”[9] This just goes to show that it’s normal to feel sad and upset after the loss of your cat.
  2. 2
Honor your cat’s life with a memorial or tribute. Hosting a memorial for your cat can give you closure. Dr. Dorsay shares his thoughts, saying, "I like the idea of writing a eulogy for the animal and reading it to somebody who would actually get it.”[10] Doing things like planting a flower in their honor or creating a photo album of them can also help.[11]
    • Another great way to honor your cat and express your gratitude for them is to create a collage, says Dr. Dorsay. He suggests making a collage of the various stages you had with your pet, including the different eras of life and important events you went through together.[12]
  3. 3
Reflect on how your cat has changed your life. According to Dr. Dorsay, reflecting on the happiness your pet brought to your life can be healing.[13] For example, he suggests asking yourself how your life is better for having known your pet. Think about what your cat has taught you and about the people who are now in your life because of them.[14]
    • For instance, Dr. Dorsay says your pet may have helped you deal with the loss of a loved one or heal from a breakup.[15]
    • Reflect on how your relationships have grown because of your cat. For instance, Dr. Dorsay says you may have met new people through your pet or felt your relationships improve because of your pet. He notes that pets are often the glue in relationships and are a way to connect you together with love.[16]
    • Pets are also great teachers, says Dr. Dorsay, so your pet may have taught you important lessons, like how to take care of someone or how to be more present.[17]
    • Dr. Dorsay adds that the final thing a pet often teaches you is how to grieve. While grief can be especially hard for a pet, he says your pet can teach you how to mourn and how to appreciate the preciousness of life.[18]
    • Additionally, Dr. Dorsay says that your pet can help you deepen your relationships even after they’re gone. Talking to a friend who’s also gone through the loss of a pet about how it feels, what grief is like, and how meaningful your relationship with your pet was can strengthen your bond.[19]
