Escape the Backrooms is a horror survival game based on the “Backrooms” creepypasta stories. The game is popular for solo and co-op play—and one of the most popular levels is Level 974, “Kitty’s House.” We’re here with all the tips and tricks you need to beat this level and unlock “The Pink House” ending, including how to beat the level, what to know about Kitty, how to find the toys, and where to find the level entrance. Let’s get started!

Tips and Strategies for Level 974 in Escape the Backrooms

  • Find 12 teddy bears by listening for the sound they make as you explore.
  • Place one teddy bear in each of the chairs in front of the stage.
  • Look at Kitty to keep him from approaching you, and listen for him if he teleports.
  • Split up if you’re playing in multiplayer mode.

  1. When you first spawn into Level 974, you’ll be standing in front of 12 chairs arranged in neat rows. The chairs are facing a theater stage. There will also be a table on your left and one on your right. Each table has a note explaining the level’s objectives: Fill the chairs with the audience (teddy bear toys) and don’t take your eyes off the slender black entity called Kitty.[1]
    • Level 974 is a two-story building. Search the hallways and rooms on both floors to find the teddy bears. Each time you find a bear, place it in a chair in the stage room.
    • Once you place all 12 bears, a spotlight will appear on the stage. Stand in the spotlight to complete the level.[2]
      • If you’re playing multiplayer, a spotlight will appear for each player. Everyone needs to stand in a spotlight to finish the level.
    • When you finish the level, you’ll earn Alternate Ending 4. (We won’t spoil it for you, but we will say it’s very pink.)

Strategies for Avoiding Kitty in Level 974

  1. Kitty is a tall, black entity with long arms and legs and no hands or feet. He freezes if you look at him, but if you turn your back to him, he’ll slowly approach you—and if he touches you, you’ll die. Always try to position yourself so Kitty is in your line of sight to keep him from attacking.
    • Kitty will first appear a few seconds after you spawn into the level.
    • If you stare at Kitty for long enough, he’ll teleport away from you. Keep searching, but watch out, because he’ll still be following you.[3]
    • Kitty is pretty slow, so if you need to run into another room, you don’t really have to worry about him catching you. Just turn back around and look at him again when you stop.
  2. Kitty makes a noise when he teleports. If you’re wearing headphones or have the volume up, it will be easier to tell where Kitty went based on the sound. Having the sound up will make it easier to find the toys, too.
    • When Kitty teleports, head to the corner of a room (preferably moving away from his teleporting sound). That way, you can watch for his approach without worrying that he’s sneaking up behind you.
  3. In multiplayer mode, Kitty targets one player at a time. He’ll only stop if the target stares at him. He’ll still approach if another player stares at him, so it doesn’t help much to have players grouped in the same room. Instead, split up into separate rooms to find the toys faster.
    • If you’re the target, just keep staring at Kitty while the other players search for toys.
    • Communicate with each other, so you know where Kitty teleports to and which player he’s targeting.

Where to Find the Bear Toys in Level 974

  1. There’s no way to know exactly where the bears will be.[4] Luckily, they’re pretty easy to find—their eyes flash pink, and they make a noise when you get close to them. The closer you get, the louder the noise, so it’s a helpful clue for where to find the bears.[5] Just be sure to watch out for Kitty while you’re searching!
    • Trivia: Even though the toys are teddy bears, they make a cat-like noise when you pick them up and place them in the chairs.[6]
  2. YouTube gamer Unpeopled claims in a video that you can beat the level faster by exploiting this glitch: Find one teddy bear and go back to the chairs. Open your Item Menu and transfer the bear from your Main Hand to your Pocket. Place the bear into the chair, then quickly restart the game.
    • In the video, Unpeopled claims that if you’re fast enough, the bear will remain in the chair and in your inventory. You can then repeat the process, putting the bear in each of the 12 chairs until you’re finished.
    • Because Kitty only shows up after you’ve been in the level for a few seconds, you can avoid dealing with him at all if you restart fast enough.
