This wikiHow shows how to jailbreak your iPhone, iPad and iPod touch running iOS 9. The process varies depending on the iOS version and device model. Jailbreaking your iOS device allows you to install tweaks as well as sideload apps downloaded outside App Store. Make sure to back up your device before jailbreaking as something could go wrong during the process.

Using Carbon (32-bit, iOS 9.0-9.3.6)

  1. Carbon jailbreak is supported on iPhone 4S, 5, 5C, iPad 2, iPad 3rd and 4th generations, iPad mini 1st generation, and iPod touch 5th generation running iOS 9.0 to 9.3.6.[1]
    • Although this article shows jailbreaks for iOS 9, it also works for iOS 8.x.
    • Carbon itself is a semi-untethered jailbreak, but, in iOS 9.0–9.3.4 when paired with EverUntether, it becomes a fully untethered jailbreak.
    • You can check the iOS version by going to Settings -> General -> About. [2]

    Open Safari. The icon resembles a compass on a blue circle on a white background. [1]

    Go to the Carbon website. Enter http://carbon.sep.lol/ in the address bar on Safari, and tap Go.[1]
    • You can add the website to home screen for easy access by tapping the share icon at the bottom and tapping Add to home screen.

    Run the Carbon jailbreak. On the Carbon website, tap Run button to run the exploit. Wait until the device reboots. After you perform this step, your device should have Cydia installed.[1]

    Untether the jailbreak using EverUntether (iOS 9.3.4 & earlier). Open Cydia on your device, tap the sources tab, tap Edit button and plus button, type https://lukezgd.github.io/repo and tap Add Source. Search for the EverUntether Package tweak, go to that tweak and tap Install, then confirm the installation.[1]

Using JailbreakMe 4.0 (32-bit, iOS 9.1-9.3.4)

  1. EverPwnage jailbreak is supported on iPhone 4S, 5, 5C, iPad 2, iPad 3rd and 4th generations, iPad mini 1st generation, and iPod touch 5th generation running iOS 9.1 to 9.3.4.[3]
    • JailbreakMe 4.0 itself is a semi-untethered jailbreak, but when paired with EverUntether, it becomes a fully untethered jailbreak.

Using EverPwnage (32-bit, iOS 9.0-9.3.6)

  1. EverPwnage jailbreak is supported on iPhone 4S, 5, 5C, iPad 2, iPad 3rd and 4th generations, iPad mini 1st generation, and iPod touch 5th generation running iOS 9.0 to 9.3.6.[4]
    • EverPwnage is an untethered jailbreak for iOS 9.0-9.3.4, and a semi-untethered jailbreak for iOS 9.3.5 and 9.3.6.
    • Although this article shows jailbreaks for iOS 9, it also works for iOS 8.x.
    • You can check the iOS version by going to Settings -> General -> About. [2]
  2. Download the EverPwnage IPA and Sideloadly on your computer, and install Sideloadly.[4]
    • If your computer is running Windows, you also need to download and install iTunes (not the Microsoft Store version).
  3. Use USB-A to Lightning or USB-A to 30-pin cable. Plug the Lightning or 30-pin end into your device and USB-A end into your computer. Trust the connection on your computer and on your device.[4]
  4. Open Sideloadly on your computer, then drag and drop the EverPwnage IPA into the Sideloadly window, then enter your Apple Account details. This will install the EverPwnage IPA into your device. [4]
  5. Go to Settings -> General -> Device Management -> [your Apple Account] on your device and tap Trust [your Apple Account] to trust the developer.[4]
  6. Open the EverPwnage app, and tap Jailbreak to jailbreak your device. After a moment, the device should reboot and after that the home screen should have Cydia installed.[4]

Using kok3shi9 (64-bit, iOS 9.2-9.3.5)

  1. Socket jailbreak is supported on iPhone 5S, 6, 6S, SE (1st generation), iPad Air 1 and 2, iPad mini 2, 3 and 4, iPad Pro 12.9 (1st generation) and 9.7, and iPod touch (6th generation) running iOS 9.2 to 9.3.5.[5]
    • You can check the iOS version by going to Settings -> General -> About on your device.[2]

    Download and install the necessary files. Download kok3shi9 IPA and PlumeImpactor on your computer, and install PlumeImpactor.[5]
    • If your computer is running Windows, you also need to download and install iTunes (not the Microsoft Store version).
  3. Use a USB-A to Lightning cable. Plug the Lightning end into your device and the USB-A end into your computer. Trust the connection on your computer and on your device.[5]

    Install kok3shi9. Open PlumeImpactor and click Settings and Sign In. Enter your Apple Account details. Drag and drop the kok3shi9 IPA into the main PlumeImpactor window. Install the IPA by clicking Install.[5]

    Trust the developer. Go to Settings -> General -> Device Management -> [your Apple Account] on your device and tap Trust [your Apple Account] to trust the developer.[5]

    Run the kok3shi9 jailbreak. Open the kok3shi9 app on your device and tap Jailbreak to perform the jailbreak. After you perform this step, your device should have Cydia installed.[5]
    • If your device crashes unexpectedly and doesn’t have Cydia installed, rerun the jailbreak again until it works.

Using Pangu9 (iOS 9.0-9.1)

  1. Socket jailbreak is supported on all devices running iOS 9.0 to 9.0.2, as well as iPhone 5S, 6, 6S, iPad Air 1 and 2, iPad mini 2, 3 and 4, iPad Pro 12.9 (1st generation), and iPod touch (6th generation) running iOS 9.1.[6]
    • You can check the iOS version by going to Settings -> General -> About on your device.[2]
    • This requires a Mac running macOS Mojave (10.14) or earlier, or Windows.

    Download and install Pangu9. For Mac, download the Pangu9 file, then open the downloaded file, and drag and drop into Applications folder.[6] For Windows, download the Pangu9 file[7]

    Run Pangu9. For Mac, open the terminal app and type sudo -b /Applications/jb9mac.app/Contents/MacOS/jb9mac, then press the Enter key to run Pangu9.[6] For Windows, open the downloaded Pangu9 file.[7]

    Disable Find My on your device. On your device, go to Settings -> iCloud -> Find My iPhone or Find My iPad and turn off that toggle. You might be prompted to enter your Apple Account password.[6] [8]
  5. Use USB-A to Lightning or USB-A to 30-pin cable. Plug the Lightning or 30-pin end into your device and USB-A end into your computer. Trust the connection on your computer and on your device.[6]

    Enable Airplane Mode. Unlock your device, then swipe up from the bottom to access Control Center, and tap the plane icon to enable Airplane Mode.[6]

    Run the Pangu9 jailbreak. On your computer, click the Start button and then the Already backup button. Wait to install the Pangu9 app to your device until it reboots, then, as mentioned in the previous step, on your device, unlock it and enable Airplane Mode, then open the Pangu app and tap Accept and OK to allow access to photo library. After you have successfully jailbroken, the device should reboot and after that Cydia should be installed.[6] [7]
    • You may get the "Storage Almost Full" prompts; you can disregard these warnings.
