   On Discord, IWC means interact with caution. Kats says IWC “means ‘interact with caution.'” Oppido agrees and explains that it “usually means the user had issues in the past with other members or had issues on the server and has been marked as a potential issue, problem, or source of conflict.” They may be acting erratically, or they may just be a good old internet troll, but either way, Kats says you should probably “stay away and steer clear of anyone with this tag.”

   • The IWC tag isn’t an official Discord status; it’s a tag added by community members.
   • An IWC tag doesn’t automatically mean the person is bad. Rather, it’s a sign that you should approach the interaction with care, caution, and an open mind. Your approach can make a difference in how they act.
   • Oppido agrees, saying, “The person could also be going through personal issues or strife and might need a bit of space, time, or extra effort. We all get there in life,” he says, and “this is a label for that.”
   • Be respectful, but don’t throw caution to the wayside. Remember that they have the tag for a reason.
   • The IWC isn’t permanent. It can be removed by community members.

   People are often tagged with IWC when they are under distress. When someone is dealing with a stressful life event, like a breakup, divorce, lack of finances, or the loss of a family member, it can lead to erratic, tense behaviors or mood swings. These behaviors and mood swings often result in the IWC tag if these feelings are taken out on other members of the Discord channel.

He says to “be alert, but also empathetic.” Put yourself into the shoes of the person tagged with IWC. They may still be looking for companionship, even if they aren’t in the right headspace. Be empathetic and remember that they may be going through a difficult time.

   • Oppido explains that the person “could be…an antagonist, or they could have just lost their mom.” Either way, he says to “be kind.”
   • Don’t put your boundaries to the side, either. If the interaction is too stressful or challenging, take a step back to protect yourself.

According to Oppido, “Staying safe while interacting with people on Discord is like any other online space.” He says, “If someone makes you feel uncomfortable, leave or handle it accordingly.” For instance, reach out to the moderator for help. These acronyms are a quick way to let other members of the channel know that interacting with certain people may yield different results. For example, DNI lets others know not to interact with someone at all, while IWEC means to be very cautious with your interactions. These Discord acronyms include:
