Ever want to try Windows 8 on VirtualBox? In such cases, virtualisation is your friend. It allows you to easily try out a new operating system without making any changes to your existing operating system. VirtualBox is the most popular free virtualisation solution available, and this tutorial will teach you how to install Windows 8 in VirtualBox.

  1. For instructions on how to download and install VirtualBox, follow the article. Though Windows 8 is no longer available for download on Microsoft's website, you can still download the ISO from Internet Archive. Make sure you download the ISO.
  2. Open VirtualBox and select new machine.

  3. Once typed, VirtualBox automatically populates the Windows version into the dropdowns.
  4. Click on the dropdown beside "ISO Image", click Other... and select the Windows 8 ISO file in the file picker window.
  5. It's at the middle of button group at bottom-right corner of the window.
  6. This is optional, but recommended for 3D acceleration and adjustable virtual machine display resolution.
    • Make sure the host name doesn't contain any spaces.
  7. Use the text fields beside Password and Confirm Password to enter your password. Then click Next button to go to the next screen.
  8. Use the provided sliders to adjust the RAM, number of CPU cores and disk size to the appropriate values, then click Next button to go to the next screen.
    • Make sure the values are in the green area.
    • Make sure to allocate at least 1024MB RAM and 16GB disk size for 32-bit version, or at least 2048MB RAM and 20GB disk space for 64-bit version.[1]
  9. It's at the middle of button group at bottom-right corner of the window. The virtual machine will launch automatically.
  10. This may take several minutes to install Windows 8 on your virtual machine.
