Seeing the True You

It's not always easy to make your perception of yourself match other people's perception of you, and that's just part of being human! And while you can't take control of others' perceptions, you can take control of your own, which helps others see that part of you. We talked to psychologists and self-esteem experts to bring you the top tips on how to do just that:

  • Licensed clinical psychologist Ashley Smith, PhD, says that "When it comes to really building confidence, the only way I know how to do that is through experience. So, you have to take those steps, stretch out of your comfort zone a little bit, put yourself out there a little bit, and see what happens."[1]
  • Life coach Leah Morris tells us to "Call a friend or somebody that you know is a big cheerleader and is super supportive... ask them, hey, what are the things that you love about me? What do you think is the best thing about me? And hearing those positive reinforcements can really quickly change someone's mood from not feeling confident to super confident."[2]
  • Professional counselor Katie Stolp explains, "I often say the worst thing that can happen to you is a feeling. If you know you can handle any feeling, then you’re unstoppable."[3]
  • Relationship coach Nicole Moore says that "Confidence comes from owning your unique attributes and understanding what you have to offer. Lack of confidence comes from comparing yourself to a standard or an idea of what you need to be in order to be chosen."[4]
  • Author of Love Yourself Like Your Life Depends on It Kamal Ravikant says that "The best way to build up self-confidence is to make commitments to yourself and keep them because you start to trust yourself and you start to become a person who can count on themselves. When you do that, that is fundamental for self-confidence."[5]
