  1. [1] The pair married in 1992 and had a complicated dynamic. The opening line “She eyes me like a Pisces when I am weak” seems to refer to Cobain who was a Pisces. Then there’s a reference to cancer when he sings, “I wish I could eat your cancer when you turn black,” which could refer to the disease or Courtney Love’s zodiac sign Cancer. Could the mention of Pisces and Cancer stand for Cobain and Love’s tumultuous romantic astrological connection?[2]
    • Charles R. Cross, who wrote the Cobain biography Heavier Than Heaven, analyzed the lyric “I wish I could eat your cancer when you turn black.” He felt it was the singer’s twisted way of expressing his love.[3]
    • The line “Cut myself on angel hair and baby's breath” refers to flowers that are popular for weddings. Some people assume this references Cobain and Love’s wedding ceremony.
  2. 2
According to Cobain, the song was about children with terminal cancer. Cobain said he was inspired by the emotional documentaries he saw showing kids with the illness.[4] Here's some other insight Cobain offered up about the song:
    • Cobain explained that the chorus "Hey, wait, I've got a new complaint" mocks the way he was represented in the media as a big complainer.
    • The second part of the chorus, “Forever in debt to your priceless advice,” was a passive-aggressive remark Cobain would say during arguments.[5]

Courtney Love says that “Heart-Shaped Box” is about her female anatomy. She tweeted this after Lana del Rey’s 2012 cover reignited interest in the song, making people question its meaning. Those tweets were removed, but they brought up another possible interpretation.[6]
    • Love claimed the line “Throw down your umbilical noose, so I can climb right back” referred to her body.
    • “I've been locked inside your heart-shaped box for weeks / I've been drawn into your magnet tar pit trap”: Being trapped in a heart-shaped box might imply Cobain being caught in an intense and toxic relationship with Love.[7]

The true meaning of the song is still up for debate. Different parts of the song have been linked to rebirth, codependency, and suicidal tendencies, such as the following line: “Throw down your umbilical noose, so I can climb right back.”[8] This differs from Love’s explanation. The line has even sparked a thread on Reddit with users giving their own speculations about its possible interpretations.[9] A few explanations from Reddit users include:
    • A woman trapping a man in a relationship and forcing him to have a child with her.
    • Cobain’s desire to return to the womb and experience a woman’s nurturing.
    • A reflection of Cobain’s issues with his mother.

Origins of “Heart-Shaped Box”

  1. The song was inspired by a heart-shaped box that Love gifted Cobain. When they were first dating, she gave him a box that had all sorts of odd trinkets inside of it, including a doll’s head detached from its body. He started writing the lyrics in 1992, not too long after they got married. He was originally going to title the track “Heart-Shaped Coffin.” Love convinced him to change “coffin” to “box.”[10]
    • According to Love, the lead vocalist for the band Hole, the guitar riff Cobain had come up with for “Heart-Shaped Box” was originally supposed to be for a Hole song. But, Cobain decided to use it for his Nirvana song instead.[11]

“Heart-Shaped Box” Music Video

  1. Even so, Cobain was largely responsible for most of the video’s concept. The overall visuals of the music video are surreal and very unusual.[12]
    • Cobain wanted to shoot the video in Technicolor, but Corbijn was unable to do this—to achieve a Technicolor effect, the video was shot in color and then changed to black and white, and then every frame had to be hand painted in color. The intricate process took several weeks.
    • The video received the MTV Music Video Award in 1994.[13]
  2. 2
The music video is full of surreal and upsetting imagery. The bizarre symbolism is one reason why it’s considered one of the band’s best music videos and why it continues to fascinate fans and music enthusiasts alike.
    • Religious themes pop up throughout the video and seem to criticize Christianity. For instance, in one scene, an elderly man climbs up a ladder to place himself on a cross, resembling Jesus.
      • Christian philosopher Taylor Marshall says this is Cobain’s way of expressing that believing in Jesus is like believing in Santa.[14]
    • The poppy field has been linked to drug use. The poppies, which are used to make heroin, are thought to be a reference to Cobain’s substance abuse.[15]
    • Images of fetuses are spread throughout the video, hanging from trees and in the elderly man’s IV drip. This could be linked to the album’s title In Utero, which is believed to be a reference to abortion.[16]
