What Is a "Hear Me Out" Character?

If you haven’t been living under a rock this year, then you’ve probably heard of “Hear Me Out" characters (or, the characters from popular movies, books, tv shows, games, who make for questionable crushes). They’re the crushes you have to defend to your friends, insisting that they should “hear you out” on what exactly makes them so appealing. That’s actually where the name comes from. Here’s an example:

Okay, here me out—I know Shrek was smelly and lived in a swamp, but his love language is acts of service…and that’s really sweet.

You might’ve even seen videos of people creating “hear me out cakes,” which are decorated with images of “hear me out” characters. As the cake is decorated, friends grow more and more shocked with each horrifying crush reveal. Nala from The Lion King. Simba from The Lion King. Or worse: Scar.

The trend began on TikTok and grew into a full-on internet phenomenon. And it’s a trend that raises some interesting questions—why are some crushes so embarrassing? And what makes us crush on someone when it doesn’t make any sense? Like a fictional cartoon villain? Who also happens to be a lion?

Some people’s “hear me outs” are so strange and niche that they truly floor friends and viewers. Here’s a list of wild ones from reddit:[1] [2]

  • The fox version of Robin Hood
  • Beetlejuice
  • Bowser
  • Karen, Plankton’s (computer) wife in SpongeBob SquarePants
  • Mr. Clean
  • The dragon from Shrek
