One of my kids loves them and one thinks they're overhyped and weird. The one who loves them thinks they're cute but is definitely swayed by the fact all her friends have them. Trends build upon themselves, I guess.

I think the Labubu craze started during the COVID pandemic when everyone was looking for a bit of joy and excitement. Even though Labubu are plush pendants, they're actually not marketed for kids. They are marketed for adults, especially "kidults" or kids in adult bodies, like me.
Kidults think Labubus are cute, but also love the excitement of the blind box. It's fun to not know which Labubu you are going to get. Famous people - like Lisa from Blackpink - also helped contribute to the Labubu craze by buying and wearing them.

Yes, that's true, it really took off when Lisa started wearing them in April 2024, but they were picked up by Pop Mart in 2019 and have been gaining traction since!

The only reason 90% of people buy labubus is because they're trendy and popular, not because they think they're cool. maybe not you specifically but many people. In this world all it takes is for a small group of people to promote something dumb and then it goes "viral" and is "popular". Most of my gen (gen alpha) and the gen before (gen z) have the attention span of a 3 year old.
