To clean a wool area rug at home, start by shaking it out and vacuuming it to remove all of the dust and dirt. After that, mix some wool-safe detergent in a bucket of water, and apply it to the rug with a sponge. Scrub small sections at a time with a stiff-bristled brush, and rinse it out with clean water. Then, just hang the rug to dry.
If you've spilled something on the rug, blot up any liquid right away. Then, apply a mixture of water and distilled white vinegar to the stain and gently scrub it with a stiff-bristled brush. If the stain is still there, sprinkle a little baking soda on it, apply more of the vinegar solution, then scrub the stain again.

To keep your wool rug clean, vacuum the rug every week, and flip it over to vacuum the backside as well. If you have a pad, vacuum it and the area between the pad and the floor too. This is especially important in the summertime when there is a lot of moisture and humidity that could create mold.
In general, keep your rug out of direct sunlight, which could fade it. Avoid walking on your rug with shoes and have it cleaned every year and a half to 2 years to help resoften the fibers and preserve its quality.
