Before you make the behavioral change, I think it's important to understand what the function of this behavior is and to do an assessment. Are you biting your fingernails because it feels good? Is it distracting you? You have likely been using that as a coping skill, or you developed that as a reaction to whatever stress or anxiety you felt.
Because removing that would leave you without that coping mechanism, it’s important to understand it first. And then maybe there's some room to replace it with something. And the best thing with something like biting, picking, hair pulling, or things of that nature, is to replace it with something else and make it much more difficult. Things like getting your nails done or wearing gloves are a good place to start because it removes the physical ability to do it.

It’s great that you’re trying to break the habit. Nail-biting is tougher to stop than people realize. One thing that helps is making your nails “unbiteable” on purpose, like keeping them trimmed, filed smooth, or using a bitter nail treatment. Pair that with a small replacement action (tapping your fingers, squeezing something soft) whenever you notice the urge. The goal isn’t to fight the urge perfectly but to interrupt the routine long enough for the habit to weaken.
