Connecting your camera to a PC allows you to do many things. You can transfer photos from your camera to your computer, you can use your camera as a webcam, or you can even control your camera from your computer. This wikiHow article teaches you how to connect a digital camera to a computer using a USB cable, an HDMI cable, or a wireless connection.

Hooking a Camera Up to a Computer

Turn on your camera and plug the small end of the camera’s USB cable into its output port. Then, plug the other end of the cable into your computer’s USB port. Select the video streaming mode on your camera, or retrieve photos from your camera using Windows Explorer or Finder on Mac.

Install the manufacturer’s software if needed. You can generally transfer photos from your camera to your computer by directly connecting it to your computer. However, your camera needs USB Video Class (UVC) support in order to use it as a webcam. If your camera does not support UVC or you want to control your camera from your computer, you will need to download the manufacturer’s software to do so. The following are where you can download the webcam and camera control software for various camera manufacturers:^{[1]

Connect your camera to your computer using a USB cable. For best results, use the USB cable that came with your camera. Connect the USB cable to the USB port on your camera, and then connect it to a free USB port on your computer.
- If you have to purchase a USB cable for your camera, make sure you purchase a high-speed USB 3.0 cable or higher. If your camera uses a USB-C type connection, you are already set.

Retrieve photos from your camera. To retrieve photos from your camera, press Win + E to open File Explorer on Windows, or open the Finder on Mac. Then select your camera model in the menu bar to the left. You may need to open the microSD, internal storage, or DCIM folder. You can drag and drop photos from your camera to your computer, or you can hold Ctrl (or Command on Mac) and select multiple photos from your camera. Right-click a select photo and click Copy. Navigate to where you want to save them, right-click, and click Paste.
- Some camera models may have their own software used to copy photos from the camera to your computer. Check the documentation that came with your camera for assistance.^{[2]

Select the webcam mode on your camera. If you want to use your camera as a webcam or control your camera from your computer, you will need to use the menu on your camera to select the proper mode to do so. The camera menu is different for each make and model. The option to use your camera as a webcam may be labeled as “Webcam,” “Streaming,” “Tethering,” “PC Remote,” or something similar.

Open your video streaming or capture platform. This can be a video meeting platform, like Zoom, or a video streaming/capture platform, like OBS Studio.

Select your camera as the source. Each software platform is different. You can generally select which camera you want to use in the Preferences or Settings menu. If you are using OBS Studio, add a video capture device as a source, and select your camera model as the video capture device. This will allow you to use your camera as a webcam.

Select a separate audio source. Digital cameras often don’t have the greatest microphones (if they have one at all). They often do not allow you to transfer audio over a USB connection. You may want to select a separate audio source in the Preferences menu of your video streaming or capture program. You can select your computer’s built-in microphone, a headset microphone, or an external USB microphone.

Connect an HDMI cable to your camera. Many newer cameras have an HDMI output, allowing you to connect your camera to a TV or computer using an HDMI cable. This will generally produce a better picture than streaming with a USB connection. Connect an HDMI cable to your camera.
- If your camera has a microHDMI port, you may need a microHDMI-to-HDMI adapter to connect an HDMI cable to your camera.

Connect the other end of the HDMI cable to a USB adapter or capture card. Most computers and laptops have an HDMI port. However, this is generally an HDMI Out port. Connecting your camera directly to the HDMI port won’t allow you to stream a picture to your computer. To do that, you’ll need a high-quality HDMI-to-USB adapter or a capture card.
- Check the specs on the USB adapter or capture card. Make sure it’s able to stream and capture in full 4K video. Most cheap adapters do not.

Select the video output settings on your camera. Use the menu on your camera to set the video output settings. A higher resolution, such as 1080p or 4K, will look better. If you have the option to do so, selecting a high frame rate, such as 60 frames-per-second will result in smoother video.

Open your video streaming or capture platform. This can be a video meeting platform, like Zoom, or a video streaming/capture platform, like OBS Studio.

Select your USB adapter or capture card as the video source. Each software platform is different. You can generally select which video capture source you want to use in the Preferences or Settings menu. If you are using OBS Studio, add a video capture device as a source, and select your USB adapter or capture card as the video capture device.

Connect your camera to the same Wi-Fi network as your computer. Some cameras can connect to your computer wirelessly. This allows you to transfer photos wirelessly or even control your camera remotely from your computer. Use the menu on your camera to connect to the same wireless network that your computer is connected to.
- The menu is different from one camera manufacturer to the next. Check under the Settings menu or in the Wi-Fi connection menu.
- Some cameras have the ability to pair with your computer using Bluetooth. To do so, select the option to connect via Bluetooth. Open the Bluetooth menu on your computer and select your camera to pair with it.

Install the manufacturer’s software if needed. You may need to download and install the manufacturer’s software for your camera, especially if you intend to remotely control your camera from your computer. The following is the remote control software that is available for different camera brands:

Open the camera software on your computer. This may be a different program, depending on whether you want to transfer images to your computer wirelessly or control your camera from your computer. Open the right software application for what you want to do.

Pair your camera with your computer. Use the menu on your camera to select the camera connection settings menu. Select the option to pair your camera with your computer using the software that you have installed on your computer. Select your camera on your computer when it is detected.

Retrieve photos from your camera. In some cases, the wireless transfer software on your computer may automatically detect the photos on your camera. All you need to do is select the photos you want to retrieve and download them from your camera. In some cases, you may need to send the photos from your camera to your computer. To do so, select the option to wirelessly transfer photos in your camera’s menu. Then select the photos or folder you want to transfer to your computer.^{[3]

Control your camera remotely. If you want to control your camera remotely, you will see a variety of camera functions in the remote camera control app. You will also see an image streaming from your camera. Use the computer control to zoom in and take pictures from your computer.^{[6]

Most PCs copy photos rather than removing them. If you want to transfer the photos, you'll need to delete them from your camera once they're done copying to your PC.
