In this wikiHow, we'll teach you how to change the language on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. We'll teach you how to change your display language on desktop, iPhone, and Android, as well as how to make your mobile app show you posts in other languages. We also cover how X's autotranslated posts work. Keep reading to learn more.

Changing the Language on X

On desktop, open X's settings and go to Accessibility, display, and languages > Languages > App and post languages, then choose a new language. For the mobile app, you must change languages in your device settings. On iPhone, you can set what language the X app uses. On Android, you must change your default language.

   Open X and click More in the left side menu. It’s at the bottom-left corner of the screen.

   Click Settings and privacy. It's at the bottom of the list of options.

   Click Accessibility, display, and languages. It's near the bottom of the menu.

   Click Languages. It's on the right-hand side of the screen, with a globe icon.

   Click App and post languages. It's the only option on this screen.

   Select the language(s) you want to use on X. If you don't see the language of your choice, you can click Show more or search for it using the search bar at the top of the pop-up.

   • Click Next to continue. If you only selected one language, X will refresh and be in the language you chose. If you chose more than one language, you'll be moved to a new page.

   Choose your default language. You'll still see content in any language you checked, but the site's language will be dictated by your default language. Note: This page will only show up if you selected more than one language on the previous page.

   • Click Next. The webpage will immediately refresh, and X will now be in the language of your choice.

   Open your Settings app. If you want to change the language for the X mobile app, you'll have to do so in your Android settings.

   Tap System > Languages & input > Languages. You may have to tap Personal instead of System, depending on what type of Android phone you use.

   • If you can't find this option, use the search bar in your settings app to find your language settings.

   Add a language. To do so, tap Add a language and then tap on the language you want to add.

   Drag the new language to the top of the list. This will set it as your new default language, forcing X to use that display language.

   Set your content language(s) (optional). The steps above will only change the display language in the X app. To tell X that you want to see posts in languages other than English, follow these steps:

   • Open the X app (or restart it if it's already open).
   • Tap on your profile picture.
   • Tap Settings and privacy.
   • Tap Accessibility, display, and languages.
   • Tap on Languages.
   • Toggle on or off any languages on this list. If you don't see the language you're looking for, tap Show more to see the full list of supported languages.
   • Tap Done.

   Open your Settings app. If you want to change the language for the X mobile app, you'll have to do so in your iPhone settings.

   Tap Apps. Scroll all the way down to find this option.

   Tap on X. Since your list of apps is sorted alphabetically, you'll have to scroll almost to the bottom to find it. Otherwise, tap the search bar and type "x."

   Tap Language. It's at the bottom of the list, under the "Preferred Language" header.

   Choose a language. Any language you have set as your iPhone language(s) will appear at the top of the list, but you can select any language that is supported by your iPhone.

   • Once you select a language, you can exit out of your Settings app. Once you return to X, the app will be in the language you've chosen.
   • Choosing a language from this list will add it to your iPhone's preferred languages in Settings > General > Language & Region.

Translating Tweets

   X will automatically translate posts into your default language. When a post pops up in your timeline that is in another language, X will automatically translate it to whatever you've chosen as your default language. If you want to see the post in its original language, click Show original next to the post.

   • If you have more than one default language selected when viewing X on your desktop, you'll see posts in that language without being autotranslated.
