Is your Surface Pen running low on battery? While it might seem difficult to replace your Surface Pen's battery, it's thankfully a very easy process. The steps differ slightly depending on which model of Surface Pen you have, but in this article, we cover how to change the batteries for all of them.
Changing Your Surface Pen Battery
You can replace the battery in any Surface Pen model by removing the pen's end. In a Surface Pen with no clip, you can pull the pen cap off. In a Surface Pen with one button, turn the pen cap until you hear a click, then pull it off. In a Surface Pen with two buttons, the pen cap screws off.
Steps
Surface Pens with No Clip
-
1Pull the top end of the pen off. Grip both ends of the pen firmly and pull. The two parts of the pen should separate easily.
-
2Remove the battery from inside the pen. Make sure to dispose of the battery properly.Advertisement
-
3Place a new battery inside the pen body. You'll need a AAAA battery for your Surface Pen. When replacing the battery, ensure the negative side (marked with a -) is inserted into the pen first. The positive end should be facing out.
- AAAA batteries can be purchased from most large stores, or you can buy them online.
-
4Insert the end of the pen back into the body of the pen. The flat sides of the pen should be aligned before you try to put the pen back together.[1]
Surface Pens with One Button
-
1Turn the eraser end of the pen about 30 degrees counter-clockwise. You'll feel the end of the pen click into place.
-
2Separate the pen body and pen end. If you can't remove the end of the pen, rotate the end a bit more until you feel it click into place.
-
3Remove the battery from inside the pen. Ensure that you dispose of the battery properly.
-
4Place a new battery inside the pen. Make sure you're using a AAAA battery. When replacing the battery, ensure the negative side (marked with a -) is inserted into the pen first. The positive end should be facing out.
-
5Insert the end of the pen back into the pen body. The metal bumps on the pen cap should line up with the half-circle cutaway on the pen's body.
-
6Turn the cap until the flat sides are aligned. You'll turn the cap approximately 30 degrees clockwise to get it back to its normal position.[2]
Surface Pens with Two Buttons
-
1Unscrew the top of the pen. You'll be able to separate the two parts of the pen once you unscrew them.
-
2Remove the battery from inside the pen. Make sure to dispose of the battery correctly.
-
3Place a new battery inside the pen body. You'll need a new AAAA battery to insert into your Surface Pen. When replacing the battery, ensure the positive side (marked with a +) is inserted into the pen first. The negative end should be facing out.
- If you want to replace the coin batteries inside the pen cap, continue reading. Otherwise, screw the pen cap back onto the pen body to use your Surface Pen again.
-
4Use a jewelry screwdriver to open the battery case inside the cap. To do this, place a Phillips jeweler's screwdriver into the battery case inside the cap, then twist to unscrew it. You'll need to insert the screwdriver through the spring to get to the battery case screw.
- If you don't have a jewelry screwdriver, you can open the battery case by inserting your fingernail or a flat object (such as a flat-head screwdriver) into the notches around the edge of the battery case, then turning it.
-
5Replace the old batteries. Remove the batteries by pulling out the battery casing, then tapping the old batteries into your hand or onto the table. Make sure the dead batteries are disposed of properly. Then, insert the new 319 coin batteries into the battery case, with the negative side facing the pen's tip.
- 319 coin batteries can be purchased in-store or online.
-
6Put the battery case back in the pen cap. Make sure the batteries don't flip over while you're in the process of screwing the battery case back into place.
-
7Put the pen cap back on the pen. Screw the two parts of the pen together until they are sufficiently tightened (but not too tight).[3]
