If you have iCloud for Messages enabled on your iPhone, your texts are automatically backed up to the cloud. But how do you access your backed-up texts? While you can’t view them using the iCloud website, you can sync your texts across devices signed into the same Apple Account. This means you can easily view your text message history on another iPhone, iPad, or even a Mac. In this article, we’ll explain how to enable iCloud for Messages and access texts on all your connected devices.
Steps
Enabling iCloud for Messages on iPhone and iPad
-
1Open the Settings app. Before you can access iMessages stored in iCloud, you’ll need to enable iCloud for Messages on your phone. Once you do that, you’ll be able to access your stored messages on other devices signed into the same Apple Account. To get started, open the Settings app on your iPhone.[1]
-
2Tap your name. It’s at the top of the Settings menu.
-
3Tap iCloud. In the latest versions of iOS, it’s in the second group of settings in the Apple Account menu.
-
4Select Messages. It’s in the Saved to iCloud group. If you don’t see it, tap See All or Show All, then select Messages.
-
5Toggle on the switch next to “Use on this iPhone”. In some earlier versions of iOS, this will be called “Sync this iPhone” instead.
- From this menu, you can also see how many messages are currently in iCloud, select how long to keep messages in the cloud before they are deleted (select Forever if you want to keep them permanently), and manage the amount of storage space available in your iCloud account.
-
6Make sure you have iCloud and iMessage enabled on connected devices. In order to access text messages that are stored in iCloud, you’ll need to enable iMessage on other Apple devices that are connected to the same Apple Account. Here’s how to do so:
- On your other iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Apps > Messages. In earlier versions of iOS or iPadOS, go straight to Settings > Messages.
- Make sure iMessage is toggled on.
- Tap Send & Receive to make sure you can send and receive iMessages from the phone number and/or email associated with your main device.
- Make sure your secondary device is connected to a cellular or Wi-Fi network.
- To force your iCloud messages to sync to a secondary device, go to Settings > [Your name] > iCloud. Make sure iCloud for Messages is enabled using the steps above, then tap Sync Now at the bottom of the Messages in iCloud menu screen.
Enabling iCloud for Messages on Mac
-
1Make sure iCloud for Messages is enabled on your iPhone. Before you can access texts in iCloud on your Mac, you’ll need to enable it on the phone you use to send and receive texts. Use the steps in the previous section to do so.
-
2Open the Messages app on your Mac. You’ll find it in the Applications folder or the Apps widget (or Launchpad, in earlier versions of macOS) in the Dock.[2]
-
3Click Messages in the menu bar at the top of the screen.
-
4Select Settings. It’s the second option in the dropdown menu.
-
5Click the iMessage tab. You’ll see this at the top center of the Settings window.
-
6Check the box next to “Enable messages in iCloud”. You can also click Sync Now to force your Mac to immediately sync messages from the cloud.
-
7Make sure you have any relevant phone numbers and emails enabled. Under You can be reached for messages at, you’ll see a list of phone numbers and email addresses associated with your account. Check the boxes next to any numbers or emails you want to send and receive texts from on your Mac.
-
8Close the Settings window. You should now be able to access messages stored in iCloud on your Mac via the Messages app. Any texts you send from your Mac will also be saved to iCloud.
