What Does “Yandere” Mean?
In anime, a yandere is a fictional character that starts out very lovey-dovey and sweet, but their affection later turns obsessive and even mentally unstable. The term itself is a combination of the Japanese words “yanderu,” meaning “mentally sick,” and “deredere,” meaning “lovestruck.” In other words, their infatuation is so strong that it essentially makes them “sick,” to the point that they do unhinged or even violent acts out of jealousy or possessiveness.[1]
Examples of yandere characters include:
- Misa Amane from Death Note
- Shuu Tsukiyama from Tokyo Ghoul
- Himiko Toga from My Hero Academia
- Yuno Gasai from Future Diary
- Rolo Lamperouge from Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2
- Monika from Doki Doki Literature Club
- Haruna Niekawa from Durarara!!
