- Joe Keery, who plays Steve Harrington, is also the frontman for the musical project Djo.
- Stranger Things’ use of Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” led to a resurgence in the song’s popularity, making it #1 on the charts 40 years after its release.
- Finn Wolfhard, who plays Mike Wheeler, auditioned for the role from his bed due to illness.
- The Upside Down was apparently supposed to be called “The Nether,” but that likely didn’t fly because The Nether is already a locale in the game Minecraft.
- Steve Harrington was meant to die in season 1, but the writer and producers kept the character alive because his actor, Joe Keery, was fun to work with.
- In the first draft of the script, the supernatural threats are called “entities,” which would have been ghostly beings unleashed by scientists.
- Vecna was initially partly inspired by Pennywise from Stephen King’s IT.
- Eleven was never supposed to survive season 1, but she was so well-liked that the writers kept it ambiguous, then brought her back.
- Barb was initially going to be a main character.
- The show was inspired by the Montauk Project, government experiments that involved child kidnappings.
- More than 1000 actors auditioned for the children’s roles.
- Gaten Matazarro was the first actor cast for the show, and they hired him after seeing his first audition tape.
- Gaten Matarazzo, Sadie Sink, and Caleb McLaughlin were all connected and knew each other before being cast for the show. They’d worked on Broadway at the same time.
- It took a four-hour meeting with Winona Ryder to convince her to be in the show.
- Eleven was partly inspired by the iconic film alien E.T.
- Millie Bobby Brown had said she was ready to quit acting before she landed the role of Eleven.
