Fun Facts About The Office

  • Steve Carell almost didn’t play Michael Scott. During casting, Carell was chosen to perform in another show called Come to Papa. But after being greenlit, Come to Papa was cancelled, which cleared Carell’s schedule. Fellow actor Bob Odenkirk almost took the role, but the producers ultimately decided to go with Carell, setting the stage for one of the funniest bosses in the history of television.
  • Phyllis’s role was created for her. Before she took on the role of the caring, kooky office mom, Phyllis Smith was the casting associate for The Office. Smith worked alongside the auditioning actors, reading lines with them to help them prepare. As she showed off her personal chops, producers practically fell in love with her performances and would end up creating the Phyllis Vance character for her.
  • Rainn Wilson accidentally sent Leslie David Baker to the hospital. In season 3 episode 23, “Beach Games,” there was a sumo wrestling match. In a deleted scene, Wilson’s character, Dwight, and Baker’s character, Stanley, engaged in sumo wrestling. When Dwight came out victorious, he kicked sand at Stanley in triumph, with Wilson accidentally getting some of the sand into Baker’s eye. Baker ended up being rushed to the hospital to get the sand out of his eye, as it resulted in a scratched cornea.
  • B.J. Novak (Ryan Howard) and John Krasinski (Jim Halpert) grew up together in real life. The two grew up in the same town, played on the same little league team, and both went to Newton South High School in Newton, Massachusetts. Although they weren’t close friends, Krasinski was the lead in one of Novak’s satirical plays during their senior year of high school. They’d eventually reunite on the set of The Office, building their friendship in the process.
