What Is a Dosha & How Can You Fix an Imbalanced One?

A dosha is a concept in Ayurveda, an ancient Indian health science that is built around five elements: air, fire, water, earth, and ether (space). According to Ayurvedic practices, these elements uniquely combine with one another to create three doshas, also known as body or constitution types. The three doshas are Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.

Ayurveda claims that every person has all three doshas making up their body, mind, and spirit. Each of these three doshas has specific traits and qualities that express themselves via an individual’s physical, emotional, mental, and personal traits. However, every person’s unique balance and blend of doshas is what makes them and their behaviors unique. Whichever dosha is most dominant within each person will have the greatest effect on their inner and outer selves.

It’s important to note that doshas can easily become unbalanced within you. When all of your doshas are balanced, you will be at your healthiest, and you will feel like the best version of yourself—mentally, physically, and emotionally. An imbalance, however, can lead to various mental and physical health issues. To balance your doshas, you must first identify which dosha is out of harmony, and then restore said harmony by consuming foods and engaging in activities that counteract the qualities of the imbalanced dosha.

For example, if you have an imbalanced Vata dosha, you might notice symptoms of imbalance like anxiety, dry skin, constipation, joint pain, insomnia, restlessness, and scattered thoughts. Since Vata is associated with cold and dryness, you want to counteract it with things like warm foods and warm oil massages.

The best way to find out which dosha is most dominant for you (and how to balance it) is to take a quiz (like this one) or, for a possibly more accurate result, consult with a certified Ayurvedic practitioner.
