What is an alebrije?

An alebrije is a fantastical creature that comes from Mexican folklore. They’re colorful, animal-like beings that can resemble a real animal, a mythological animal, or a combination of multiple animals (e.g., a lion with an eagle’s head). They’re often depicted with exaggerated features and bold, colorful patterns and sold as small wooden or paper-mâché sculptures.

In some regions of Mexico, alebrijes are believed to represent spirit guides that provide protection and wisdom to the person they’re assigned to. Known as “tonos,” these spirit guides look after their humans and their well-being.
