What is Quidditch?
Quidditch is a fictional sport played on broomsticks in the Harry Potter universe. In the game, two teams of seven face off to score the most goals. Goals can be scored by throwing the Quaffle (a large ball) through one of the other team’s three goal hoops, or by catching the Golden Snitch (a very tiny golden ball) before the other team’s seeker. Here’s a more detailed breakdown of each of the Quidditch positions and the equipment used to play the game:
-
Quidditch Positions
- Seeker: The Seeker’s job is to look for the Golden Snitch, then catch the ball before the other team’s Seeker does. When the Seeker catches the snitch, they score 150 points for their team and end the game.
- Keeper: The Keeper’s job is to guard their team's three goalposts so the other team can’t score.
- Chasers: The 2 Chasers’ jobs are to throw the Quaffle through the other team’s goal hoops to score points for their team.
- Beaters: The 2 Beaters’ jobs are to knock the Bludgers (balls enchanted to knock players off brooms) away from their own teammates and toward the other team.
-
Quidditch Equipment
- Broomsticks: The sport is played in the air with the players on brooms.
- Goalposts: Three hoops at the end of each side of the Quidditch pitch that rise about 50 feet up into the air that players try to throw Quaffles through to score points.
- Quaffle: A large ball that Chasers try to throw through the goalposts to score points for their team.
- Bludger: Slightly smaller than the Quaffle, this ball is enchanted to try to knock players off their brooms.
- Golden Snitch: A tiny golden ball with wings that is quick-moving and hard to see. Considered the most important ball in the game because catching it earns your team 150 points and ends the game.[1]
