Finding Your Style

Consider your lifestyle.
Your style comes from your day-to-day activities. It’s a costume, but it’s a functional one that works with you, not against you. It doesn’t make sense to dress in super expensive, spotless clothing if you work a dirty job that gets you grimy. Think about your hobbies, your job, your schedule, and the people you hang around to start to get a sense for what works for you.

Follow your passion.
You’re a canvas, and your clothes are how you paint it! The most important part of your style is your personality and your passions. What do you like? How do you want to feel? If you feel good in your clothes, then you’ll look good in them, too. Don’t worry too much about trends or what others say is hip or fashionable. That’s a great way to drop loads of cash on constantly shifting fads and burn through your wallet fast. But if you follow your instincts, you’ll find your own signature, timeless look.

Take cues from your style heroes.
Think of celebs, designers, or other public figures whose looks are on point and steal some looks from them. There’s no law that says you can’t, as long as you’re not literally raiding your closet. Don’t worry about not being “original.” Originality will come when you find your own sensibility and start tweaking and adjusting.

Get thrifty.
Building a wardrobe can be expensive, especially when you’re starting from scratch. That’s what secondhand and thrift stores are for! You’re almost guaranteed to find at least one hot item if you look hard enough, and chances are that piece will become a one-of-a-kind wardrobe staple.

Get some staples.
Staples are the anchors of your wardrobe, versatile pieces that can go with almost anything else in your closet. Things like plain shirts, plain pants, and plain shoes that you can mix and match with more clashy, louder pieces. Then, once you learn that mix-and-match game, you can start to move away from basic staples and inject a little more flair.
