All About IQ Scores

What is IQ?
IQ stands for intelligence quotient. It’s a general, rough measurement of someone’s intelligence based on their performance in a standardized test that tests concepts like math, language, and reasoning. That said, almost every IQ test is different, which should give you a clue as to how accurate they really are.

Where did IQ come from?
The idea of trying to quantify intelligence into a score or a single number isn’t anything new, but English statistician Francis Galton was the first to attempt to make a standardized test for this purpose in about 1882. Various researchers then adapted his tests to their own standards. In 1912, psychologist William Stern coined the term IQ for his own intelligence tests.

Are IQ scores accurate?
Yes and no. There’s no test on earth that can tell you how intelligent you are. Human brains just don’t work like that, and intelligence comes in many forms. What an IQ test can do is tell you how well you did on that test compared to other people. A “good” IQ test will try to measure your ability in many different topics and subjects, but it still won’t tell you how smart you are; just how well you did on that particular test, and there’s more to life than test taking!

What’s a good IQ score?

  • Average: 90-100
  • Above-average: 100-115
  • Excellent: 115-130
  • Genius: 103+
