If you're just starting to date, avoid going to dinner and a movie. This isn't a good fit for an early date, even though people think of it as a classic. Instead, I recommend going to a bar and grabbing drinks. Make sure it's convenient to get to for your girlfriend, and not in a sketchy part of town. Do some research — I always recommend going to the bar beforehand, and reserving seating if you can — about what the bar is like on the day and time you want to go. For instance, maybe they have live music one night that is hard to talk over, or trivia night that would interfere with building your relationship. Try to find a spot that can give you some privacy (like a corner booth) but isn't empty. That'll be a good vibe for the date. Also, see if you can find a spot that serves food, because if you're having a great time, you'll want to get food too.
I like drinks because they get you open and talking to each other, but there's no pressure with them. If you are a fun, confident person, you can also try to do active, fun things like minigolf or bowling. But only do these if you feel like you're the type of person who enjoys them. If you aren't, it will be awkward and inauthentic.
