Reagan "Rory" Conley is a therian, furry and mask shop owner based in Buffalo, NY. Rory has known he was a therian for most of his life and began making therian-style masks in 2023. Rory’s masks are one-of-a-kind and completely hand sculpted. Rory shares a variety of therian and furry content on his YouTube Channel, BirdyDogs, to his community of over 71k followers, including instructional therianthropy content and mask making tutorials. Rory’s theriotypes are a wolf, mountain lion, and a prehistoric animal called a cameroceras.

Being a therian covers a wide variety of different experiences, so don’t worry if your experience as a therian is different than others! Therianthropy, at its core, is a personal identity. If you feel as if you are a therian and the label fits you, then you’re a therian. No matter what anyone else may say or think!

Does being a therian affect your life?
Being a therian in ordinary circumstances shouldn't cause any negative impacts on your life. It is literally just identifying as an animal. In fact, it can build a sense of community, make you feel more at home in your body, and at peace with who you are. It can expand who you are and how you go through life, and there's a community of folks that you can connect with.

If you are experiencing negative side effects, that probably isn't your therianthropy, but it may be an underlying condition or mental health condition. It is not bad to identify as an animal as long as you understand the healthy limit of identity.
Am I a Therian?
Therianthropy encompasses a wide range of experiences. The term therian is pretty vague in definition; it is anyone who identifies as a non-human animal. When it comes to identity and identifying, that is basically the key indicator that you are a therian. If you identify as an animal and you feel you are an animal, regardless of whether you feel more connected to being a human sometimes, as long as you feel like you are the animal and your theriotype, then you can use the label therian. And there's nothing wrong with using the label therian until it doesn't fit or doesn't feel right. I recommend trying out the label therian and wearing it for a while. And if the label feels comfortable for you, then use it. It doesn't really matter what other folks say about the experience or if you have a different experience from another therian, as long as you identify as a non-human animal.
Anyone here also a furry and a Therian? I’m looking for friends who understand.
It's actually pretty common to be both a therian and a furry. A lot of therians are also furries, but not a lot of furries are therians. So, if you're looking for therian friends who are also furries, I would look in therian spaces first. Sometimes furries don't understand because they don’t identify as an animal but are just a fan of anthropomorphic animals and fursuits. So to find more friends that are both, I'd start in therian spaces.
How do I tell my parents I'm a therian?
There are a couple of ways I usually recommend. First, start by showing the community and expressing that connection and what it means to you. It’s less jarring to parents to start there. Second, I wouldn't sit them down to have a serious conversation. I would try to find a way to bring it up more casually in conversation. You could say something like, “There’s this group of people called therians who are connected to animals and feel like we are animals. It’s a way of expressing ourselves, and it’s not anything to be scared of, but it’s just who I am.” I find it works better when you work it into a conversation while already talking about animals or your group of friends or anything that you can relate to therianthropy.

And another thing I want to add is if it seems like it would be dangerous or detrimental to your mental health, it's probably best not to come out as a therian or tell folks that you are a therian. If you see any signs that they might make fun of you, it might hurt you, or it might make you feel bad about your identity, I would recommend waiting or just not telling them.
What are some fun things I can do as a domestic cat therian?
One thing about therianthropy is that therian gear can be literally anything. Something I recommend is getting keychains and putting them on your backpack, like a cat paw keychain or a cat stuffed animal keychain. You could also get wall hangings or posters of things you enjoy, maybe a cat poster or paw prints. You can also wear outfits that are the color palette of your cat. For example, if you are a black and white cat, you can wear a black and white outfit, maybe even a fur jacket. It’s a subtle way to show the colors of your domestic cat theriotype.
