What's the most important thing when it comes to gaining followers?

Posting quality posts on a consistent basis multiple times a week is one of the most important things you can do to grow your following. You want to focus on posting quality content that's interesting and valuable to your audience.

How do you navigate sensitive or controversial topics on social media?

Try to be mindful, intentional, and thoughtful before you respond, especially if you're feeling emotional about something. Remember that whatever you post will be public. Try to remember that there's a human being on the other side of that, so even if you disagree with them or they're acting disrespectfully, you don't have to lash out or be a bully yourself. Try to always be respectful and mindful, and assume that other people have good intentions.

How can I limit social media use without completely cutting it out?

You could try the old school technique of setting a timer. Let yourself have 20 minutes or so at the end of the day to relax and look through social media. Once the time goes off, you stop. Another thing you can do is set aside a specific timeframe during the day to use social media, like from 12 to 12:30 every day. That would be your social media time to catch up with everyone and engage with the community.
